Counterfeiter
Kills Self in Jail
Ukiah, Calif. W A confessed
counterfeiter slashed his throat
with a razor blade and bled to
death in his Mendocino county
jail cell Wednesday after he
penned a will leaving S100 to
death row author -Caryl Chess
man. Authorities said Waldo Saxon
Newton, who signed his hand
written will with the name of
John Saxon Matthews, fixed the
blade to a bootlace and drew the
suicide weapon across his jugu
lar vein before two cellmates
realized what was happening.
Newton, scheduled to be sen
tenced in Superior Court Thurs
day after he pleaded guilty to
counterfeiting and passing bogus
coins in nearby Calpella, Calif.,
named the San Quentin author
beneficiary in the document
sheriff's deputies found in his
cell.
Newton, arrested in his trailer
court home Thursday where au
thorities found a press and molds
for coins, a pistol with a home
made silencer, a blackjack, and
four 4-yound dynamite bombs,
willed the rest of a 53,000 savings
account to Calpella attorney
John Robin with instructions he
be cremated and his ashes scat
tered behind his trailer.
Explosion Kills 17
In Scotland Mine
Muirkirk, Scotland (IP) An
explosion ripped through a coal
mine near here Tuesday night,
killing 17 miners. The rest of the
300-man force scrambled to safe
ty through falling rock, fumes
and heavy dust.
Rescue crews which worked
through the night recovered the
bodies of 15 miners trapped
1,000 feet underground by the
blast. Two other miners brought
to the surface died of their in
juries today in a hospital.
The explosion occurred in the
Karnes Colliery, one of the old
est working mines in wester.i
Scotland. The sound of the blast
echoed throughout the adjoining
countryside and brought hun
dreds of men and women to the
pit head.
It was Britain's worst mine
disaster since 1951 when 81 min
ers were killed in an explosion
at Easington.
CAR SUGGESTION
Tallahassee, Fla. m Wilbur
Jones, Florida Road Department
board chairman, says he has
written the nation's three larg
est automobile manufacturers
and asked them to install built
in trash baskets in their cars.
"I'm confident that the motoring
citizens of the United States
would appreciate such coopera
tion of the automobile industry
in helping to make America
more beautiful," Jones said.
