MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE ELEVEN
Bike Lights To Be Checked In Near Future, Chief Says
Eugene Jaycees Send
Telegram to Eisenhower
Eugene OP) The Eugene
Junior Chamber of Commerce
Wednesday sent a night letter
with 1,741 signatures to Presi
dent Eisenhower, backing up a
previous invitation for him to
make one of his scientific de:
velopment speeches in MacAr
thur Court on the University of
Oregon campus.
The telegraphed petition bore
the names of Jaycee members,
members of service clubs and
other organizations, and individ
uals, including Dr. O. Meredith
Wilson, president of the Uni
versity of Oregon.
Bicycle lighting equipment
ill be given close attention in
the more rigid enforcement of
thej)icycle ordinance by city po
lice which will start in the near
future, according to city police
chief Charles P. Champlin.
Champlin said, under the ordi
nance, bicycles are required to
have a light which can be seen
at least 300 feet from the front
of the bike. They also must have
a reflector or light visible for at
least 200 feet from the rear of
the bicycle, according to the or
dinance. The chief said bicycle riders
should not make a habit to ride
at night, even with lights, as the
practice i3 highly dangerous. Car
driver's vision is limited at night
and riders are not always seen
The officers will also check
amount of enforcement is for the
even if they do have lights on
their bicycles, are correctly rid
ing and are wearing light color
ed clothing, he said.
Will Check Signalling
The enforcement campaign
will also cover the proper use
of hand signals by bicycle riders,
he said. Riders are. required by
state law to use the regulation
hand signals when moving in
traffic. A left turn is signaled by
extending the left hand straight
out from the body, a right turn
is signaled by raising the left
arm in an "1" shape with the
hand pointed up and a stop sig
nal by reversing the right turn
signal and pointing the hand
down, said the chief.
for Medford bicycle licenses
during the approaching period
of rigid enforcement, he added.
The licenses are required by the
bicycle ordinance and cost only
25 cents.
The license makes a bicycle
easier to find if stolen or lost,
according to the chief, who said
frame numbers and a complete
description of the bicycle are re
corded in the police department
files when the license is issued.
Champlin said that if a bicycle
is sold during the year, the new
owner should come down to the
station to change the name. No
charge is made for the name
change, he said.
Purpose of the Increased
safety of the riders, the chief
said. He said the maximum fine
if found guilty of violation of
the ordinance could be $10 or
impounding of the bicycle up to
seven days. The chief indicated
that bicycles would be impound
ed rather than fines imposed.
A speciak court is scheduled
for ordinance violators, accord
ing to municipal judge Noreen
Kelly. She said it would be held
on Tuesday mornings about 8:30
ajn. She and the chief are con
sidering making parents appear
with the juvenile who is charged
with violating the ordinance.
