Timber Sales Drop On Revested Lands
Portland Sales of timber
from Oregon and California re
vested railroad grant lands of
western Oregon administered by
the Bureau of Land Management
were down in July - October.
1957, by more than 10,000,000
board feet in volume and more
than $1,000,000 in value from
the first four months of fiscal
1957, it was reported.

October timber . sales report
shows fiscal year sale3 to date
total 126,845,000 board feet val
ued at $3,439,835, compared to
136,975.000 board feet value at
$4,635,976 during the first four
months of fiscal 1957.
Sales of green timber were not
down very much in volume for
the period. Heath pointed out
Sales through October, 1957,
amounted to 93,116,000 board
feet compared to 94,536,000
board feet during the first four
months of the last fiscal year
wbut the value was down from
$3,166,239 last year to $2,515,-
296 this year.
Salvage timber gales for the
period amounted to 33,729,000
board feet valued at $924,539
this year compared to 42,439,000
board feet valued at $1,469,736
last year. " -
October sales of green timber
were down to io,690,000 board
feet compared to 26,159,000 in
September and salvage sales
dropped from 8,479,000 board
feet in September to 6,706,000
board feet.

Debris of Wreck
Studied by CAB
San Francisco (W A team of
civil aeronautics experts studied
today debris recovered from the
sea after the crash of the Pan
American Stratocruiser, "Ro
mance of the Skies."
The debris arrived at San
Francisco International Airport
Tuesday night from Long Beach,
Calif., where it was brought by
the carrier Philippine Sea. The
carrier spearheaded a week-long
search for the plane.
The plane disappeared Nov. 8
while flying from San Francisco
to Honolulu with 44 persons
aboard. The bodies of 19 were
recovered and brought to Long
Beach aboard the Philippine Sea
The 'debris was contained in
23 boxes. It ranged from luggage
to seat 'cushions and floor ma
terial from the plane. The only
parts of the plane itself found
were a small emergency door,
a heavy piece of steel from an
engine cowling and a partially
charred kitchen cabinet.
Leon Cuddeback, head of the
CAB team, said the debris was
"flotsam, not real, wreckage."
"It may require from 10 days
to two weeks to reach even a
preliminary conclusion," he said.
"There are many facets to the
investigation. We don't know
what it will show."
Cuddeback said the CAB has
invited representatives of the
FBI, Pan American and Boeing
Aircraft company, manufac
turers of the Stratocruiser, to
join in the investigation.
Large Reunion Planned
For Ship's Company
All former crew members and
officers of the USS New Mexico
who are interested in a ship's re
union are asked to contact Le

A number of former crew
members of the ship have formed
the necessary committees to or
ganize a ship's reunion, he said.
The battleship served in two
world wars. She was commis
sioned in 1918 and served until
shortly after World War II.
The level of Lake Michigan is
about 21 feet lower than that of
neighboring Lake Superior to
the north.
U.S., Canada List
Airstrips in DEW
Line Area in North
Washington (tP The United
States and Canada have come
close to pinpointing for all to
know the locations of many of
the secret radar stations provid
ing warning of possible attack
across the top of the world.
U.S. defense officials said,
however, the net result will be
more, rather than less, security
for the two countries.
The two governments have
just made public the names and
exact locations of 21 main air
strips serving the radar sites
comprising the distant early
warning (DEW) line across the
top of North America.
The air strips were identified
when the two government estab
lished a new polar air defense
zone through which no airplane
may fly without following a pre
scribed flight plan and without
being positively identified.
Marked by Parallels ,
The new zone .runs roughly
along a band marked by the
68th and 70th parallels of lati
tude. Similar identification zones
run across the United States
Canadian border, up and xiown
the continent's coast and around
Alaska.
Airplanes flying through the
zones must file advance flight
plans. They need the en route
navigation facilities and radio
communications of the zones to
establish their courses.
The DEW line landing strips
were identified so flyers will
know where radio beacons are
located and have access to emer
gency landing strips if needed.
The list of 21 strips was pub
lished in the Canada Gazette, a
weekly government publication.
They also were identified in the
November "Radio Facility
Charts," a booklet issued under,
authority of the United States
and Canadian Air Forces and
Navies.
Locations Still Secret
While exact locations of the
radar stations remain secret,
they obviously are not far from
the landing strips which were
installed for use of airplanes
supplying the stations.
There are 23 other landing
strips which were not identified
because they lack radio aids
useful to planes passing over.
The airstrips which have now
been identified stretch from
Cape Dyer on Baffin island's
northeast coast through Cam
bridge bay on Victoria island's
south coast to Shingle point near
the mouth of the Mackenzie
river.
Pentagon officials said a simi
lar listing of DEW line landing
strips is expected soon for
Alaska. '

farm, they also decide to adopt
little Tommy (Jon Provost) who
was introduced on the show ear
lier this year.
Then, while eyes mist, Jeff
and his mother prepare to leave
the old homestead.
Lassie is caught in the middle.
The big collies senses she is
going to be left behind, yet she
can't be too upset because, after
all, she still has Timmy and the
farm.
At any rate, by the time the
Millers roll off in their old car
everybody in the cast is blubber
ing. CBS hopes the nation-wide
audience also will be weeping
bucketsful.
Growth, Death Force Change
The transition was forced
when young Rettig outgrew his
part. The real-life death of
George Cleveland, who played
"Gramps," and Miss Clayton s
desire to move on, ended the old
format.

A relative newcomer to tele
vision, Shepodd is a slow, easy
going man with a twinkle in' his
eye. He believes his role in the
series' will give him public iden
tity and insure his future acting
career.
Cloris is a happy-go-lucky
girl, a little on the plain side,
who has her troubles with Lassie
in the first few episodes.
Both Shepodd and Miss Leach
man agree, however, that by this
time next year they'll be as close
to Lassie fans as the original
cast, v
Western Granted
Route to Phoenix '
Washington (IP) Western
Air Lines Inc., has been granted
a new air route from Phoenix
to Seattle via Los Angeles by
the Civil Aeronautics board.
The action was taken Tues
day with the stipulation that
the route must originate at Port
land or Seattle and terminate
at Phoenix on one end and or
iginate at Phoenix and termin
ate at Portland and Seattle on
the other end.
. It was also stipulated the new
flight to Los Angeles could not
serve Denver, preventing West
ern from running shuttle flights
into Los Angeles. Western was
granted a route from Denver to
San Diego via Phoenix last Sept.

here. The railroad told the South

Monaco Royalty Has

The royal couple, expecting
a second child, went through a
series of celebration in Tuesday's
"Fete Nationale" that would
make a commoner's head swim.
They attended a solemn high
mass at the cathedral, reviewed
the armed forces in the palace
square, went to a noisy football
game, and capped the day with
the opera.
Somehow they also presided
over two private parties.
It was the first big celebration
for this tiny principality on the
Mediterranean since the Prince
and his Hollywood princess were
married last year and it even daz
zled local residents. ,
The level of the Mississippi
river between dikes in New Or
leans is normally about 3 feet
above sea level and is also often
well above the average level of
the city's streets.
Japanese Papers Criticize Sentence
of Japan's biggest newspapers
today criticized the- suspended
sentence granted Army S3C
William S. Girard on his con
viction on manslaughter charges
in the shooting of a Japanese
woman.
The Mainichi and A s a h i
termed the' verdict handed down
by the Maebashi district court
against the Ottawa, 111., soldier
"too lenient." The third of Ja
pan's "Big Three" newspapers,
the Yomuri, said the sentence
was "appropriate" because it
had to "be solved with political
considerations."
Most Japanese agreed with
the sentiments expressed by the
Maichini and Ashai. Many felt
the suspended sentence was tan
tamount to a verdict of innocent
and that Girard should have
served at least a part of the
three year term imposed by the
court.
It was noted that Girard
would be free to return to the
United States if no appal is
made by the prosecution or de
fense within the next 14 days.
Girard was convicted by the
court in the Jan. 30 firing
range death of Mrs. Naka Sakai.
He was sentenced to three years
imprisonment but the sentence
wa suspended for four years.
