Three Medford Police Officers Qualify
As Instructors For Driver Training
Three Medford police officers
have recently been qualified as
instructors for a driver's defen
' ive program which will get un
der way soon for all employees
of the city who use a car in'their
work, according to Robert A.
Duff, city manager.
The program will cover about
70 to 100 employees, he said.
O The groups will be small with
about six hours of total instruc
tion, driving and demonstration
being given to each, he added.
Some of the instruction will be
by the officers to the employees
on city time, he said.
The officers will be given
equal time off for the time spent
in instructing the group, Duff
aid. Classes will be given t the
city hall council chambers and
"on the road," he said. Each
employee will be given the "be
hind the wheel test" in a vehicle
he drives for the city.
The program is modeled after
several large companies' driver
programs, according to Duff. He
said the program would be more
in the form of classes rather
than tests but a test will be giv
en as the final act of the course.
The officers, who each re
ceived eight hours of classroom
and eight hours of field work,
were taught by L. B. McKeller,
who is the chairman of safety
for Pacific Telephone and Tele
graph company. The officers are
H. Tomlin Furnas, Dean Abshire
and Roy L. Thompson.
Special equipment needed for
the "on the road" tests will be
made by the city shops, accord
ing to Duff. He said he hopes the
program will cut down the num
ber of accidents in which city
employees are involved. Al
though Medford's average of ac
cidents is now equal to the na
tional level, he said he hopes the

Bids Being Taken
On City Police Cars
The Medford purchasing de
partment has announced bids are
now being accepted on six new
police cars and on one city car
to replace old equipment now in
use.
The police department's six
cars are to be 4-door, V8 models
with an automatic transmission.
Five of the police cars will be
marked with the white front
doors and equipped with the top
siren while' a sixth will be an
unmarked car for the chief.
One of the cars now in use
by the police will be kept for
next year, according to the po
lice. They said bids would be
accepted on both passenger cars
and on station wagons.
The car wanted by the city
must meet all requirements of
the police cars, according to the
bid sheets. The city car will have
standard transmission. Five po
lice cars and one city car will
be offered as trade-ins by the
city.

cle riders in connection with a
more rigid enforcement pro
gram for the city's bicycle ordi
nance which will begin in the
near future.
Champlin urged pedestrians
to always set a good example
for children by crossing streets
only at intersections. Waiting
for the signal to change and
looking both ways for turning
traffic before crossing are also
stressed by the chief.

DA to Dismiss Fong
Charges in Hank Case

County District Attorney Leo
Smith1 said today his office will
drop the remaining charges
against -Mr. and Mrs. Wey Him
Fong in connection with the
case of Diane Hank.
Sherry Fong, 26, was acquit
ted of a second degree murder
charge in the girl's death last
week by a unanimous jury ver
dict. Fong was released from the
murder charge in April, 1956,
on a directed verdict of acquit
tal. The remaining charges were
for contributing to the delin
quency of a minor against both
the Fongs, and a charge of re
moving a body without permis
sion of the coroner against Mrs.
Fong.
