I have been having a dispute
about something which really
bothers me very much.
I have a dear friend of 29, who
is about to make a foolish mar
riage. Sandra is a very quiet girl
and not very pretty, but she has
a wonderful nature and is in
telligent and accomplished. She
has never gone out much with
men.
Now she has become engaged
to a man of nearly 40, who is
as different from her as night
from day. He is loud, ill man
nered, uneducated and physical
ly almost disgusting. I feel San
dra is suffering from "29 panic"
and is taking a desperate step.
She has no immediate family to
advise her and I think I should
try to get her to see what a mis
take this marriage would be.

think of this man and on my
husband's advice I said, "He's

right to lie about it.

man is wealthy and he also is
very good natured and seems to
be head over heels in love with

her make a better marriage, but

she got out of school and maybe
she wants the security she can

tal in breaking up this affair,

her liking. On the other hand, if
Sandra goes ahead and marries
the man, our relationship with
them would be very awkward
to say the least.
If Sandra were to ask me what
to do, I'd say, "Go ahead and
marry the guy. Why wait?"

We don't think he ought to take
the responsibility for encourag
ing the match any more than
for discouraging it.
"At 29, an intelligent girl
should be able to weigh one
value against another and arrive
at her own decision. True, she
may be suffering from "panic"
but the extent and importance of
this is something only she can
weigh. If the panic is severe, it
may get even worse if she enters
her 30's unwed.
We think Edith could have
given her friend a more helpful
answer than she did when she
said, "He's very nice." This clos
es the door to any discussion,
If Edith had, instead, pointed
to the assets her husband notes,
Sandra may have brought out
some of her uncertainties. Since
Sandra has no family, an open
discussion with her friend could
have helped her to clarify her
own thoughts.
Edith shows her shortcomings
as an adviser when she bases
her judgment of Sandra's fiance
entirely on surface things all
of which can be changed.

Neuberger Assured
No Shift Planned
Portland (IP) Sen. Richard
L. Neuberger (D-Ore.) said to
day that he had received assur
ances from the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service that no Port
land personnel would be shifted
to Seattle as a result of estab
lishment of a Bureau of Com
mercial Fisheries regional office
there.
Neuberger, who originally op
posed the regional headquarters
in Seattle, also said that he had
been promised by Commissioner
Arne J. Suomela that the Bureau
of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife
will remain in Portland.
Neuberger is a member of the
Senate Interior committee.
Suomela said about a dozen
people were working in Portland
on commercial fisheries matters
related to the passage of migra
tory salmon of dams. He said
"Since our commitments on the
Columbia river are firm, we
can see no reason for consider
ing the transfer of these people
at any time in the foreseeable
future."

Drilling Conducted
For Nickel Deposits
Cave Junction (Special) Churn
drill operations to determine
nickel deposits on Gasquet
mountain in Del Norte county
have been started by New Jer
sey Zinc company.
Pacquin and Story of Grants
Pass have been given the con
tract for the two months drilling
process.
This is one of several prelimi
nary nickel explorations being
conducted in the rugged coun
try just across the state line in
California. It is similar to that
carried on in the Illinois Valley
last summer by Nickel Corpo
ration of America. All the area
in the northern corner of Del
Note county is believed to be a
part of the same deposit that is
currently being studied in the
Illinois Valley.
Redmond Man Killed
In Plane Accident
Madras (TP! One Redmond
man was killed and another crit
ically injured Sunday afternoon
when their two-passenger plane
crashed 30 miles northeast of
here near Ashwood.
Dead was Robert Louis Glodt,
21. A. J. Sheffield, 32, father of
four children, was listed in criti
cal condition at Central Oregon
district hospital in Redmond.
Glodt, a bank clerk and own
er of the plane, and Sheffield
had been prospecting for ura
nium in the area. Police found a
Geiger counter in the wreckage.
The two men left Redmond
early Sunday and were last seen
at, noon, two hours before the
wreckage ' was discovered by
Frank Wheeler of Ashwood.
State police said Glodt, a li
censed pilot, had apparently
been, at the controls.

Stomach Called Dumb

with a man's stomach or a wom
an's is that the thing is a "mor
on" and can't tell the difference
between "hunger for food and
hunger for affection."
Thus Dr. Vincent Edward La
scara carried on with the new
est psychiatric effort to make
psychosomatics crystal clear to
anyone. Success in that endeav
or could spell ruin to the mak
ers of countless stomach nos
trums. The hook-up between physical
and emotional matters in all of
us is no where quiet so clear
as in the good old G.I., or spell
ed out, the gastro-intestinal tract,
he said.
It is indeed, "the sounding
board of the emotions . . " The
psychosomatic premise is that
once emotions are understood
and regulated and given normal
and healthy outlets they no long
er mess up bodily functions.
Lascara found "the most prev
alent function disorders" caused
by emotional play on the G.I. to
be loss of appetite, nervous vom
iting, constipation, nervous di
arrhea, nervous indigestion, irri
table colon, belching, and "but
terflies" moving inside."
Stomach Has "Sense"
Loss of appetite may "repre
sent punishment of self or oth
ers" he said. "Attempts to gain
affection may be a motive. On
the other hand, martyr complex
or deep-seated death wishes may
lead to anorexia loss of appe
tite." All this shows the stom
ach is "moronic," he added.
Now, move from stomach to
colon. It, too, is "sensitive to
emotions and nervous tension."
"Family jealousy, parental
domination, marital conflicts,
family insecurity, morbid fears,
frustrations, business reverses,
family quarrels, sudden shock
ing news, identification with ill
ness or death . of a member of
the family or a close friend, may,
by suggestion cause functional
suffering in a predisposed indi
vidual," he continued.
And "unconscious mental con
flicts can cause vomiting. The
patient literally cannot 'stomach'
the situation." He went on to
suggest there is "abdominal mi
graine," and doctors suspecting
such exists should ask the pa
tient if he also "suffers from
migraine headaches."

ers and ulcerative colitis are
quite serious physical disorders

He was addressing himself pri
marily to noh-psychiatric physi
cians, and to them in particular
he said: "Telling the patients the
illness is in their mind and that
they will have to get over it
themselves, leaves a bad taste.
These persons are ill. They need
support and aid toward solving
their problems and must receive
interested attention."
There was no suggestion in
his lecture that such disorders
were to be ignored or that only
the emotions should receive
treatment. Contrarily, he empha
sized the need for all the labor
atory studies which are dear to
physicians who are devoted to
physical symptoms and their
possible physical meanings. But
he was emphatic that the emo
tions could not be left out of
the reckoning.
Alvin York Goes to
Court on Tax Charge
.Nashville, Tenn. OP) World
War I hero Alvin C. York, in ill
health and "broke cashwise,"
goes to court today to face an
$85,000 federal tax claim.
The government claims that
amount should have been paid
on proceeds from the successful
movie "Sergeant York," made
in 1940. The 69-year-old sergeant
says he doesn't owe this sum
and certainly doesn't have the
money to pay it.
York lives on a pension of $60
a month and says his only as
set is the 400-acre farm he was
given after his return from war.
He had a stroke in 1954 and has
been confined to a wheelchair
since. v
A fellow Tennessean, Demo
cratic Sen. Estes Kefauver, has
gone to bat for the sergeant but
nothing has come of his efforts
as yet. The legislator said in his
opinion profit from the movie
should have been subject to cap
ital gains tax rather than in
come tax.

Residents Warned
Of Sucker Schemes
Following Deaths
Don McNeil, manager of the
Jackson County Chamber of
Commerce, warned residents of
the area today against so-called
"hearse-chasing" schemes.
Citing a bulletin from the
National Better Business Bur
eau, with which the chamber is
affiliated, McNeil stated that
such schemes are conducted by
individuals and organizations
who usually secure names and
addresses from obituary notices.
Using these Notices, promoters
of "hearse-chasing" schemes at
tempt to victimize the family and
relatives of recently deceased
persons.
The chamber executive cited
the example of a firm which
has been contacting members' of
families in which a death has
r.ecently occurred. The firm sta
ted that the late family mem
ber had ordered a Bible ' from
the firm before his or her death,
and had made an advance pay
ment of $5 or $10 on the Bible.
In at least one instance, the firm
alleged that the original corres
pondence had become lost and
the actual date of the order
could therefore not be ascer
tained. The firm has stated a
sum of $39.50 is due on the
Bible, and requests payment
from the next-of-kin to whom
the letters are addressed. Recip
ients of the letters state that
they are quite certain that the
recently deceased family mem
ber had never ordered the Bible.
McNeil stated that, in other
instances of "hearse-chasing"
schemes, the promoter will send
a COD package to the family tf
the deceased again alleging the
merchandise was ordered by the
person who recently passed
away. Unsuspecting persons
have frequently paid for such
packages, although the merch
andise never really had been
ordered by the deceased.
The chamber executive stated
that unordered merchandise ac
tivities are also conducted on
the basis of obituary notices. In
some instances, firms have sent
copies of the obituary notice
encased in plastic to the family
of the deceased, requesting that
a certain sum of money be re
mitted for the encased clipping.
He pointed out that recipients
of this or any other type of
unordered merchandise in the
mail should be aware that they
are under no obligation either
to pay for it or to return it.

Dr. Sheppard Praises
Inmate of Prison
Columbus, Ohio (IP) Dr. Sam
Sheppard, serving a life sen
tence for the murder of his preg
nant wife, Marilyn, has written
an editorial in the Ohio peniten
tiary newspaper praising in
mates for their work in the
prison hospital during a recent
virus epidemic.
Shepaprd said more than 500
inmates were in the prison hos
pital last week suffering from
the disease. He said many others
helped take care of the overload
and still kept up with their pro
duction schedules.
Sheppard gained nationwide
publicity when he was convict
ed in a sensational nine-week
trial for the slaying of his wife
in their Bay Village, Ohio,
home July 4, 1954.
Senator Kennedy Calls
For Immigration Change
New York (IP) Sen. John F.
Kennedy (D.-Mass.) called Sun
day for a "new look" in U.S.
immigration laws and suggested
preference be given to scientists.

American Jewish Congress, Ken
nedy said legislation should pro
vide for redistribution of na
tional quotas, permanent visas
for 30,000 Hungarian refugees
in this country, discretionary
power for the President in hard
ship cases and a non-quota pool
