Knowledge of Obscure Sicknecc
Raises Public Health Questions

tific knowledge of an obscure
sickness called "silo-filler's dis
ease nas raised two important
questions of public health.
The questions were raised by
Dr. R. R. Grayson, an authority
on the disease since he works
in Perryville, Mo., where silo-
filling is a major occupation.
Dr. Grayson's questions are:
Isn't the cause of silo-filler's
disease also the cause of the
sickening qualities of some of
the smogs that hang over indus
trial cities? And can't that cause
be contained on occasion in the
cereal grains which people eat?
The cause of silo-filler's dis
ease is the combining of nitro
gen with oxygen which occurs
in the fermentation stew that
goes on inside silos. The disease
is a peculiar type of pneumonia
which can be fatal. Silo fillers
get it by working inside poorly
ventilated siios.
Thorough Study
Dr. Grayson was the first to
describe the disease, back in
1954. There now have been 11
fully authenticated cases in
silo-fillers. But with accumu
lated knowledge of the disease 1
I process and how the process is
put into motion, Grayson now
is convinced that it "is not con
fined to people who fill silos,
but has afflicted others in many
occupations and places and no
doubt is a factor in other ob
scure respiratory illnesses."
Airline Hostesses
Threaten Strike
Los Angeles OPl A federal
mediator was expected to meet
today with representatives of
both sides in an attempt to avert
a threatened strike of more than
200 stewardesses against West
ern Airlines at midnight.
Western Airlines said it learn
ed Clarence G. Eddy had been
appointed mediator and was sent
here by the National Mediation
board to seek a settlement. The
Airline Stewards and Steward
esses Association announced
Tuesday a strike was planned
for 11:59 p.m. today.
Both sides were said to have
agreed to continue talks, al
though the ALSSA, as of Wed
nesday night had made no
change in plans to strike.
Rowland K. Quinn, Chicago,
president of the association, was
among those expecting to meet
today with the mediator.
The union seeks a $35 a month,
across the board salary increase
for the stewardesses, retroactive
to last April. A contract which
expired seven months ago pro
vided a base salary of $210 a
month. Western Airlines has of
fered $225, a company spokes
man said.
Sputnik I Had Three
Sections; Not Two

Scientists at the Smithsonian
Astrophysical Laboratory in
Cambridge, Mass., said today
that Sputnik I, the original
earth satellite, has three sections,
not two as first believed.
The experts said various re
ports from moonwatchers
throughout the world showed the
nose cone of the rocket is the
third section. Previously, only
the satellite and the rocket were
definitely identified.
It was also believed that Sput
nik II may have a second part,
besides the section which carried
Laika, the space dog. Five or six
observations by. expert astrono
mers indicate the satellite has
two separate parts.
In a report issued by the Sov
iet Union Wednesday, scientists
said Sputnik I will expire by
the end of December while
Sputnik II will enjoy an "appre
ciably longer" life. . '

parently was "comfortable to the
end" and was alive at least until
last Sunday when radio trans

said that under normal condi

struggling against drought, ni
trates accumulate even to JCi
soning levels.
He pointed to various obscure
diseases which have appeared in
cattle and other grazing animals
and said they were basically
due to nitrate poisoning. Sine
it happens to these animals, "it
is possible that people may also
at times get into the same trou
ble after eating grain." He urged
physicians to look for these ni
trate caused disorders "among
our patients."
