Varicose Veins
People keep asking what to
do for varicose veins. In those
many cases in which they are
not causing
much trouble,
all that is
needed is to
wear an elas
tic bandage or

not very con
spicuous. If the
r Aivarc veins are gei-
&lgC larger, and causing pain or
swollen ankles or a leg ulcer,
the best thing to do is to have
them removed by an expert in
this field. He usually makes a
little cut at the lower end of
the leg, he slips around the vein
that is to be removed a ring
which is on the end of a long
rod. He then pushes the ring
up along the vein, separating it
from its little branches and sur
rounding structures. When he

Hypothyroidism
Hyperthyroidism
People ask what is hypothy
roidism and what is hyperthy
roidism. In Greek hypo means
under hyper means above. The
thyroid gland produces a sub
stance which tends to regulate
the speed at which our body
chemistry runs. It is like a gov
ernor on an engine. If a woman
has a toxic goiter and hyperthy
roidism, with too much thyroid
secretion in her blood, she is
likely to have a tremor of her
hands; perspiration may be run
ning out of her armpits; her
heart will be running much too
fast; she may have an increased
appetite, and yet she will lose
much weight. I have seen these
people lose 50 or 60 pounds in
weight in a short time. The wom
an may have a diarrhea, because
the bowel is moving too fast.
Usually she will sleep poorly at
night. She will feel so warm
she will kick off the bed-clothes
and open the windows. Her
brain may be so poisoned that
she will become irritable and
unreasonable and perhaps, a bit
psychotic. She will be blinking
her eyes too often. When she
comes into my office, I may note
right away that she is too rest
less to sit still. She will be fidg
eting. Her eyes may be bulging
forward; her skin may have a
reddish color, and when I reach
out and touch her hand, I will
note that it is warm, just as if
she had a fever of 102 degrees.
When I get a surgeon to re
move much of her overly-active
thyroid gland she will immedi
ately calm down and become
much more comfortable, but I
fear she will always remain
nervous.
It is dangerous to let a mark
ed hyperthyroidism so untreated
for years because eventually the
heart and liver becomes so badly
poisoned that the person may
die. Often, before death the
pulse becomes irregularly ir
regular with no proper rhythm
to it.
Face May Look Pudgy
A woman with hypothyroid
ism is slowed-up and dull and
perhaps sleepy during the day.
She feels cold. She may go to
sleep while seated in my recep
tion room. She tends to get fat
and her face may look pudgy.
She will not perspire and her
skin will get dry. Her hair may
become brittle. She may lose
all interest in sex. She may feel
so cold that at night she wants
to pile on the bed-clothes. Some-

Davis Lake Area
Scanned for Boys
Oakridge, Ore. w State
the coastline of Davis Lake, 42
miles east of here today for two
Oakridge teen-agers who did not
return from a duck hunting trip
Monday evening at the lake.
Five boats patrolled the lake
without success.
Missing were Gary Clark, son
of Ervin M. Clark, and Wayne
Cline, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack
Cline. Both boys are 17.
State police officer Floyd Sis-
son said a metal canoe used by
the youths was found floating
in a cove at the northeast end
of the lake about 6 a.m. Tuesday
and that there was a hole in the
side of the craft caused by a
shotgun blast. Both Clark and
Kline had 12-gauge shotguns
with them.
Sisson said there were no
tracks along the shore where
the canoe was found but search
ers discovered two hats belong
ing to the boys, a paddle, two
life preservers, a thermos jug
and some apples near the cove.
He said a paddle was found in
the canoe.
A-pickup -truck used by the
pair to haul the canoe to the
lake was located at the Davis
Lake guard station.
Emergency Power
Given Gaillard
For Algeria Case
Paris W The National
Assembly voter1, emergency
powers to Premier Felix Gail
lard shortly before midnight
Tuesday to deal with the spread
ing Algerian rebellion and new
outbreaks of Moslem violence
in France itself.
Gaillard turned today to an
other pressing problem
economics. He goes before the
Assembly Thursday with a de
mand for emergency financial
powers and will ask it to ap
prove a move to raise $274 mil
lion in new taxes a plan already
under fire by the right wing.
'New Front' Reported
The Assembly voted Gaillard
the Algerian emergency powers
after hearing that the Algerian
nationalists had "opened a new
front" in France itself and were
planning to open a new battle
front in Algeria.
The vote was 344 to 211, a
comfortable margin but less
than Gaillard's note of approval
by the Assembly.
The special powers act gives
the government special police
powers to cope with the rebel
lion. These include the right to
conduct night searches and as
sign forced residence (close to
house arrest). They were first
given to Socialist Premier Guy
Mollet on March 12, 1956, and
must be renewed by Parlia
ment within 10 days following
the formation of a new cabl

times in July I will recognize
a hypothyroid woman in a mo
ment because she is wearing a
fur coat. Her pulse is likely to
uc jiuw, diiu sue may leu me sue j
has lost practically all of her
body hair.
In borderline cases the doctor
will have some tests made of the
thyroid function. He may have
the basal metabolism tested (a
breathing test). I seldom order
this test made because, after
years of experience, I can gen
erally tell if the thyroid gland
is functioning normally. I am
sure that it isn't hyperthyroid
if the person's hand is cold and
the pulse rate is normal, and
I'm sure the woman is not mark
edly hypothyroid if she is wide
awake and keen; if she answers
my questions quickly, and if she
is handling an important job in
some office.
If a woman is really hypothy
roid with a basal metabolic rate
of less than minus 20 per cent,
she should feel like a new wom
an when she takes thyroid sub
stance every day. If thyroid sub
stance only makes her jittery, it
is very probable that she does
not need it.
People ask "What is lichen
planus?" This is a disease of
the skin . which usually come
symmetrically on both sides of
the body. It usually itches se
verely. Some of the spots come
where the skin has been scratch
ed". I read that common places
for the disease to appear are
the front of the wrist, the inner
side of the thigh, and the lower
part of the back, between the
buttocks. The cause of the dis
ease is not well known. Women
are more likely to get it than
are men, and sometimes there
are several cases in a family.
The disease is often rebellious
to treatment.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers
will understand that . it would
be impossible for him to answer
requests for information or to
attempt to diagnose by mail.
