New York T? Welterweight
Jimmy Archer, a fighting steve
dore from Pier 88, will get his
first main event at Madison
Square Garden, Dec. 20, for
scoring his 12th straight victory
Monday night at St. Nicholas
Arena. '
Archer, 22, won his second
consecutive split decision over
Tony DeCcla of Brooklyn in
their return TV 10-rounder. Jim
my took the first split verdict
over 21-year-old DeCola in the
same ring on Sept. 30.
During the Archer - DeCola
main event, four fist fights broke
out among the rival admirers,
and police ejected the principals
from the arena. o
Archer weighed 143 pounds;
DeCola, 147.
Matchmaker Billy Brown of
the International Boxing Club,
which has no apparent connec
tion with little St. Nick's, was
at the ringside Monday night,
and signed Archer for a Dec.
20 fight against rn opponent to
be agreed upon later.
Coincidentally, Archer's 19-year-old
brother Joey also a
welterweight scored his 12th
straight victory at St. Nick's
Monday night by winning every
round in the six-round semi
final with Paul Griffin of
Brooklyn
It was Jimmy's 15th victory
in 16 fights and DeCola's ninth
defeat in 35.
DeCola's good performance,
despite his defeat, earned him
another TV bout at St. Nick'
on Nov. 25 against Larry Board
man of Marlboro, Conn.

49ers Owens
Claims He's
LA Ram Fan
By GLENN STACKHOUSE
San Francisco, HP R. C.
Owens, the rookie flanker back
whose pogo-stick pass catching
has had the San Francisco Forty
Niner opponents talking to
themselves this year, is a man
with confessions to make.
Since he was in knee pants,
the 23-year-old Santa Monica
boy has been (you should excuse
the expression) a Los Angeles
Ram fan.
He first saw Y. A. Tittle play
football when he was 13 years
old. That's when the now-famous
San Francisco quarterback was
a rookie with the Baltimore
Colts.
This admission probably
makes the balding Y.A. feel like
groping for the rocking chair
and slippers.
Even at the tender age of 10,
young R.C. (that's my name
just plain R.C.) was determined
to one day become a pro foot
ball player.
'T got the idea early," he says.
"But I sure never dreamed I
would wind up catching passes
from the same player I watched
with the Colts."
Discounts Age Difference
Compared to some of the griz
zled, broken-nosed Forty Niners,
Owens is no more than a babe
in arms, but the age differen
tial doesn't bother him a bit.
"I got used to playing with
older fellows at the College
of Idaho," he said. "I was 17
when I entered college and some
of the players were ex-servicemen
who were 27-28 years old.
A lot of them were married men
with families. I didn't know
whether to call them mister or
not."
Owens, who has found a home
in Kezar stadium, is undoubted
ly the most sensational rookie in
pro football this year due mainly
to his uncanny ability to pull
passes out of the stratosphere.
He has broken up three foot
ball games with circus catches
this year.
Although he is only six feet,
three inches tall, R.C. confounds
his defenders by consistently
out-jumping them for the high
ones. He attributes his ability to
his extensive college and semi
pro basketball training.
A Matter of Timing
"It's really mostly a matter
of timing," he said. "I was al
ways a front line man in basket
ball and you develop real timing
going after those rebounds."
From the stands, Owens ap
pears to 0 about 15 feet into
the air for those sensational two
handed grabs of his. He, him
self, doesn't know actually how
high he gets.
"A basketball ring is 10 feet
from the floor and I used to
specialize in the two-hand for
ward dump shot," he says. "My
elbows would be about even
with the rim."
Rearing into the air with a
couple of defenders on your
neck is not the most gentle phase
of football, R.C. says. "You get
a lot of hips and elbows in the
scramble. You just have to
learn to concentrate on that ball
and forget the other guys."
That terrific Y.A. to R.C. com
bination is far from a prayer
play. It's practiced a lot and the
two are just plain getting good
at it.
"Tittle throws me those float
ers that just sort of 'hang' up
there," Owens says. "We work
on it over and over in practice
and we're connecting with about
50 to 60 per cent of them."

Rocket Line Showing No

Montreal OP) The high
scoring "rocket line" of the
Montreal Canadiens Maurice
and Henri Richard and Dickie
Moore, showed no signs of slow
ing down today in the National
Hockey League scoring race,
again rating 1-2-3.
The 36 -year -old Maurice
Richard added a goal and three
assists last week to boost his
point total to 23 in Montreal's
first 13 games, one more than
his 21-year-old brother, Henri.
Four points back of the Richard
brothers was linemate Dickie
Moore with 18 points.
to name a successor to Hank
Greenberg, fired last month, and
reports persisted that Lane
would get the post.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer
flatly predicted late Monday
night that Lane would be named
Greenberg's successor. However
Tribe officials refused to com
ment on any of the reports.
The Plain Dealer said Lane
conferred in Chicago Sunday
with two Indians vice presidents
Nate Dolin and George Med
inger.' The officials earlier in
terviewed Bill De Witt, former
general manager of the defunct
St. Louis Browns.
De Witt reported was dropped
from consideration because he
refused to accept anything but
a three-year contract.
GOLF PLAY POSTPONED
The mixed two-ball golf tour
ney planned for Rogue Valley

postponed because of wet weath
