Washington TP There was
little but bad news for the Re
publican Party in this week's
scattering of
elections.
One bright
spot: Califor
n i a ' s Gov.
Good win J.

doned his re
election cam
paign, leaving
the GOP nomi
nation to Sen.
F. Knowland,

while he seeks Knowland's Sen
ate seat.
The Republican Party in Cali
fornia thereby avoided a pri
mary contest which could have
been destructive. Vice President
Richard M. Nixon is credited
with arranging the foregoing so
lution of a party problem in his
own state to the considerable
improvement of his chances to
win the 1960 Republican presi
dential nomination.
The further word on Califor
nia is that Knowland was not
enthusiastic about the deal, be
ing anxious to lick Knight in a
bruising primary contest and,
further, being contentedly con
fident that he could do it, too.
Bad News
Bad news: New Jersey Negro
voters remained loyal to the
memory of Franklin D. Roose
velt's New Deal. FDR's political
heir this week in New Jersey
was Democratic Gov. Robert B.
Meyner who defeated Republi
can nominee Malcom S. Forbes.
Returns from New Jersey's Ne
gro wards will depress Republi
can strategists and comfort
Democratic office holders in the
North. Northern Democrats
have been fearful that their Ne
gro constituents would desert
them in protest against the
white supremacists who domi
nate the party in the South.
More bad news: Virginia vot
ers reversed the state's trend
toward the two-party system in
a whopping endorsement of
massive, unrelenting opposition
to racial integration of the pub
lic school system. The endorse
ment of massive resistance and
the reversal of the two-party
trend will have impact through
out the old Confederacy where
Virginia is historically a ' pace
maker. Bad news continued: The poll
ings elevated two bright, new
Democratic figures to national
prominence. New Jersey's Gov.
Meyner was off to a fast start
toward the 1960 Democratic
presidential nomination, having
demonstrated his vote-appeal
independents, Negroes and, im
portantly Republicans. New
York Democratic Mayor Robert
F. Wagner Jr. was re-elected
with a bulge of nearly 1,000,000
votes. Wagner became a deadly
menace to any and all Republi
can holders of statewide office,
especially including Sen. Irving
M. Ives who is up for re-election
next year.

dent Eisenhower's urgent en
dorsement and, in New Jersey,
despite campaign stumping by
Nixon and other administration
notables.
All of this and the Democratic
win in Wisconsin's recent sena
torial election indicate a politi
cal pattern or the emergence of
a trend toward a substantial
Democratic victory in next
year's congressional elections.
Such a victory, In turn, would
establish a trend toward the
election of a Democratic presi
dent of the United States in
1960.
Now is the time, as someone
said, for all good men to come
to the aid of their party, al
though it already may be too
late.

O Some people know just the right time to make
investments and good buys on merchandise.
They are not the majority. Most of us are
over-optimistic when things are going well,
and overly pessimistic when conditions slow
down. On such a basis, we buy too much in
good times and pass up the really best buys
when the market is slow.
In less than ninety days, we will be enjoying
spells of Spring weather. That's when the ma
jority will buy. An economic upturn is defi
nitely "in the wind" now. We are on the
verge of an "out-of-this-world" activity.

Knife, Fork Speaker
Says Americans Are
Most Misunderstood
Americans are' the most mis
understood people in the world,
largely because of Hollywood
films, according to Baron Hans
de Meiss-Teuffen, who spoke last
night for Rogue River Valley
Knife and Fork club.
The Baron, native of Switzer
land but using a title bestowed
on the family by an Austrian
king, spoke mostly of his adven
tures while traveling and living
in different countries, but added
statements of political import
from time to time.
Baron Meiss-Teuffen said the
manner in which we give away
money and aid to foreign nations
contributes to the unpopularity
of the United States, and that
"some of the hate for the British
glances off on the U. S."
The speaker said most Amer
icans truly have a "help thy
neighbor" spirit, as evidenced by
the many civic and charitable or
ganizations, and that he be
lieved the rest of the world, par
ticularly the Europeans, should
cultivate this spirit.
However, he declared that our
help to foreign nations is often
misguided and misunderstood,
and that in some countries it is
charged "when the Americans
help a country, they help the
rich to become richer while the
poor only get poorer." He said
this is repeated oftenest in the
nations where government is
still largely feudalistic and only
a small number of leaders run
the government while the masses
have no part in controlling pol
icies or decisions.
Baron Meiss-Teuffen believes
that this country should "get
tougher" about foreign aid proj
ects and should see that money
is expended wisely and in the
right places. He gave as an ex
ample of bad planning the build
ing of a huge dam in Afghanis
tan partly as an irrigation proj
ect only to find that soil in the
area to be irrigated has such a
high salt content it will not pro
duce crops.
The Baron spoke of his ad
ventures as a sailor he set a
record of 58 days for a solo trip
across the Atlantic in a small
boat and of his experiences
while traveling or living in many
parts of the world. This included
"cloak and dagger" work for
both the Germans and English
during and after World War II
and planting and cultivation of a
plantation in the Belgian Congo
which he operated in connection
with a trading post and stopping
place for travelers.
