high school youth, died in a Port
land hospital Wednesday. He suf
fered a kidney injury during
football practice at school Oct. 2.
Otto Kofler, coach of the Hi
lander football team, said Lyons
was blocked from the front ;
while he was backing the line in j
practice.
'He got up as though the wind j
had been knocked out of him
but he appeared to be all right,"
Kofler said. The youth was hos- j
pitalized next day. j

the ancient city of Itbekah in
clude potteries, copper and glass
objects and an ivory statue of a
sphinx which indicated a link
between this ancient Jordanian
civilization and that of ancient
Egypt.

Chance Observations Out of
Which Comes Cures for Disease
Every so often a physician
will observe something that
gives him an idea out of which
comes a cure
for some dis
ease. For in
stance, some
160 years ago
an English
general practi
tioner, named
Edward Jen
ner, was told
by milk maids
that they did
not have to get smallpox be
cause, early in life, they had con
tracted cowpox from blisters on
the udders of their cows. Jen
ner pondered on this, and final
ly inoculated his children with
material from the cowpox post
ules. Then he exposed the chil
dren to smallpox, and they did
not get it. Because of Jenner's
following up of his hunch, soon
millions of persons throughout
the world were being saved
from suffering and death.
Similarly, years ago, a physi
cian noted a fact that had appar
ently been known from ancient
times, namely, that persons with
a form of insanity called paresis,
often regained their reason
when they had an attack of ma
laria. He started giving such pa
tients malaria, and the method
worked so well that it was used
until penicillin came along to
help the persons get well in an
easier and safer way.
Normal Blood Pressure
Many people ask, "What is
normal blood pressure?" Actual
ly, of course, in most cases it
varies with age. In young people
under 40 I think the systolic
pressure (at the top of the pulse
wave) ought to be between 90
and 130 mm. of mercury. Some
physicians, when they see a
pressure of from 90 to 110
mm. think it is so low it should
be treated, but I never could
share this view; I have seen too
many healthy persons and even
athletes with a pressure around
100 mm. I used to have such a
pressure when in my twenties,
every summer I would walk 20
miles a day through the Calif
ornia Sierras and climb moun
tains along the way. Today, my
systolic pressure is 137 mm. of
mercury and I am very grateful
it is that low.
In a high percentage of cases
the systolic pressure in both
men and women tends to go up
with the years. But here is an
important point: In quite a few
cases of both men and women,
it never does go up. My father
at the age of 84 still had a sys
tolic blood pressure of about 130
mm. As I said, some of us physi-

in an old person is too low and
should be treated, but I just re
joice when I see it.
In women the systolic pres
sure generally starts climbing
by the age of 40, and after 10
years it may be up around 170
or 130. In those many cases in
which a woman with such a
pressure remains perfectly well,
and has no symtoms of hyper
tension, I do not see any sense
in treating her with drugs. If
she is too stout, I tell her she
could probably help herself
much by going on a sensible re
duction diet and staying on it. I
treat the woman with drugs
only if she has symptoms, and
if she feels definitely better
when her pressure is lowered.

letters or diagnose by mail.

Dalles would start this week. The
dredge Wahkiakum was moved
to Reed island opposite Corbett
