and Roberto Rossellini obtained
a legal separation in Rome today
The action apparently signalled
the end of the "sacred love" for
which Ingrid seven years ago
sacrificed family and " suffered
exile from Hollywood.
Ingrid formalized the action
In a secret noon appearance be
fore Magistrate Dr. Mario Elia
at the Palace of Justice.
A short while later, Ercole
Graziadel, the couple's attorney,
announced the separation.
The lawyer also released the
text of a letter signed by Rossel
lini and Miss Bergman in which
they said they had found "dif
ficulty in continuing life to
gether for some time."

nett retired at the age of 79 after

Bennett graduated from the
Mansfield State Teachers college
In Pennsylvania in 1901. After
teaching for several years, he
decided on other employment
because ' "the pay wasn't very
good."
As a teacher you only work
ed seven months a year," he ex
plained. "On the railroad you
worked 12."
There sometimes a differ
ence of as much as 40 feet be

Rossellini Disappears
Graziadei said Miss Bergman,
scarcely recovered from Asian
flu, went to the Palace of Justice
and formally declared her legal
sparation from Rossellini before
Magistrate Elia.
"The separation is consensual
(by mutual consent), for incom
patibility of character," the an
nouncement said.
It said Rossellini left immed
iately after the visit to the law
courts "for an unknown destina
tion." Miss Bergman returned to the
home which she had shared here
with Rossellini only since last
Thursday after a separation of
more than 10 months.
Rossellini went to Paris again
during the week end but return
ed to Rome Tuesday.
The Italian movie director had
been in India shooting documen
tary films during his long separa
tion from Ingrid. In that time,
his name had been linked roman
tically to Mrs. Das Gupta.
He denied any romantic in
volvements, but Sonali was re
ported to have preceded Rossel
lini to Paris before he returned
there for a reunion with Ingrid
a couple of weeks ago.
Letter Made Public
Along with announcement of
the legal separation by mutual
consent, lawyer Graziadei issued
a letter signed by Rossllini and
Miss Bergman in which they said
they had found "difficulty in con
tinuing life together for some
time."
The letter was dated Oct. 31
And the address was the Hotel
Raphael in Paris, where the pair
stayed after Rossellini returned
from India Oct. 20.
Oct. 31 was the day the couple
left Paris to return to Rome to
gether after an 11-day period of
reunion that was regarded as a
"second honeymoon."
The couple's letter was ad
dressed to Graziadei. It said:
"For some time we have en
countered difficulties in continu
ing our life together. The dif
ferent directions which our art
istic activities have taken during
the past two years, have also
been affected by differences in
viewpoint and interests which
divided us and which already
had been interpreted in this
sense.

. "All this has brought us, after
long reflection, to the decision to
separate for good.
."An unforgettable past, the
love for our children and re
ciprocal profound affection guar
antee the serenity of our future
relations."
The reference in the letter to
an earlier "interpretation"' of
the factors which finally caused
the tempestuous romance to
break up apparently was to the
announcement of an "artistic
separation" which the couple
made last year.
Shortly after that announce
ment was made, Ingrid left for
Paris to make the Oscar-winning
movie "Anastasia" and to appear
in the play "Tea and Sympathy."
Just after Christmas, 1956, Ros
sellini went to India.

St. Martin's Guild Meets

tin's Guild met at the home of
Mrs. Dale Sawyer, president,
Monday, Nov. 4. The Rev. Bruce
MacHenry was present as well
as eight members and two guests,
Various plans were discussed
and an inspirational talk was
given by Mr. MacHenry. The
meeting adjourned with refresh
ments. The next meeting will be
held at the home of Mrs. Bob
Vincent Monday, Dec. 2.
The Shady Cove PTA will
meet Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the
Shady Cove school plans for
coming events will be made and
all parents and interested parties
have been urged to attend.
The annual Carnival-Bazaar
sponsored by Our Lady of Fa
tima club Saturday. Nov. 2,
at the church hall was consider
ed successful. Mrs. " Eva Seg
essenman. chairman of the club
expressed appreciation to merch
ants of Medford and of the Shady
Cove-Trail area for their help
as well others who helped.

The Garden club meeting
Monday. Nov. 11, at the home
of Mrs. Walter Turner of Trail
has been cancelled due to illness.
A project of the Garden club
and one that improves the ap
pearance of the business district
in Shady Cove is the planting
and maintaining of flower beds
around utility poles. This fall
the beds have been planted with
Oregon grape, other shrubs,
bulbs and perennials. Doing the

Tepper, Mrs.. Ed Houston, Mrs.

their first meeting of the year at

talked on the rock hunting trip
he and his family took during
the summer vacation into Brit
ish Columbia and the Kamlo-
ops national forest. Program for
the evening was given by Floyd
Kelley who showed colored
sildes with Mrs. Kelley acting
at narrator.
It was decided that for the
November meeting a trip to the
Crater Rock Museum in Central
Point should be planned. The
meeting to be held Dec. 10 will
be the Christmas party with a
grab bag rock exchange between
members and guests. The meet-

The 4-H sewing club met Sat
urday, Nov. 2, at the home of
Cynthia Hollgrave. Mrs. Chap
man, our leader, showed us dif
ferent kinds of material to use,
and how to match them. The
potluck dinner for the evening
meeting was discussed.
The next sewing meeting will
be held Dec. 7 at the Bolton's
at 425 Normal ave. The general
4-H meeting will be held Nov.
27, at the Belview Grange. The
meeting was adjourned and re
freshments served.

tinue all 'day. Hot lunches will
be served. This is a benefit for
the maintenance . of the Shady
Cove street lighting system and
for sight conseevation. The com
mittee in charge includes Bill
Ducker, Floyd Kelley, Ted Jan
tzer, Harry Goods, Delbert
Spain, Athel Dudley, Paul Davis
and Donald Harmon.

nounced her engagement to
muscular Mickey Hargitay, the
former "Mr. Universe," on her
return from a 40-day European
trip.
A 20th Century-Fox Studio
spokesman said Miss Mansfield
accepted a 10-carat diamond en
gagement ring from Hargitay
as they drove from Los Angeles
International Airport to her
home.
The 23-year-old actress, who
recently attended an audience
held by Queen Elizabeth in Lon
don, said: "I didn't thing any
thing would top meeting Queen
Elizabeth, but this even surpas
ses that great thrill."
No date has been set for the
marriage. The studio spokesman
said Miss Mansfield was await
ing final processing of papers
divorcing her from Paul Mans
field. It will be Hargitay's sec

New York For the first time

National Foundation for Infan
tile Paralysis, a family, rather
than a singlechild, has been
chosen to appear on its nation
ally distributed March of Dimes
poster and coin collectors.
A young Air Force officer's
family, the Joseph L. Solomons
of Warner Robins, Ga., has been
named 1958 March of Dimes
Poster Family, it was announc
ed today by Basil O'Connor,
president of the National Found
ation, Their picture will appear
on millions of pieces of cam
paign literature and posters.
During January, they will make
a coast-to-coast tour, appearing
at polio fund events.
All Had Polio
Mrs. Helen Solomon and her
three children Joe, nine, and
twins Lindy and Sandy, six
all had polio during a single
week in 1953, and they have
been fighting the effects of the
crippling disease ever since. The
father of the family, Maj. Joseph
L. Solomon, was away on tem
porary duty with the Air Force
at the time.
"As the Salk vaccine makes
'new' polio more and more in
visible, the Solomons are a vis
ible, living reminder that the
polio problem does not end with
the woderful headlines on de
clining polio incidence," O'Con
nor said.
Total March of Dimes aid to
the family to date has been over
$5,000, in addition to substantial
sums the family has spent,
O'Connor said. Many more
thousands of dollars will be
needed for the operations and
rehabilitation techniques neces
sary if Joe and Sandy are to live
normal, productive lives.
Since second attacks of polio
are possible, all three children
completed the full series of three
Salk shots when the vaccine be
came available.
