Public Prefers Blue
Chips To Oats, Dogs
In Viewing Market

prefers the blue chips to the oats
and docs in the stock market.
At least they
like best to
look at quota
tations on the
top - ranking
stocks in the
nation's brok
erage houses.

finds the most popular stocks are
the ones in the best averages.
Chrysler Corp. tops the list
and is quoted on 470 of the
boards. Next comes General Mo
tors, Standard of Jersey, and U.
S. Steel on 469 boards each. Gen
eral Electric and Bethlehem
Steel are on 465 of the boards.
Westiriouse Electric, New
York Central, and American Tel
ephone are quoted on 460
boards. Then come Anaconda
on 459. Republic Steel on 458,
Radio Corp. on 456, Boeing Air
plane, Kennecott Copper, and
International Telephone on 456.
Oil and railroad issues led in
popularity in October, the Tele
register compilation showed. Of
the top 100 issues in boardroom
popularity 13 each were in oils
and rails.
Then came the metals and air
crafts with nine each; chemicals
and steels with eight each. .There
were five utility and communica
tions issues.
There were four each of air
line and automobile issues: three
each of rubber, mercantile and
amusement; two each of paper,
textile, farm implement, electri
cal equipment, liquor, and build
ing; and one each of tobacco,
soft drink, office equipment,
container, air conditioning and
electronics.
The same situation prevails on
the American Stock Exchange
where the top issues are Elec
tric Bond Si Share, U.S. Foil B,
Pacific Petroleum, Molybdenum,
Imperial Oil, International Pe
troleum, and Barium Steel.
The big board listings run
neck and neck with those in July
but are changed in a few in
stances compared with the ' end
of 1955. At that time, General
Motors was No. 1, and Bethle
hem Steel No. 2. Chrysler was
7th and Standard of Jersey 5th.
Teleregister boards list 1,221
New York Stock Exchange
stocks, 285 American Exchange
stocks; 81 Midwest Exchange
stocks; 33 bonds; nine industrial
bonds, and 125 different com
modity future contracts.
Spread of the use of these quo
tation boards reflects growing in
terest in the stock market de
spite its decline.
The top 100 issues comprise
the who's who of the stock mar
ket so far as the stock issues are
concerned. And those issues for
the most part haven't lost their
popularity on the brokerage
house boards in the past years,
the tabulation reveals.

it may be a feeble show but
again it may be a great display.
Just 124 years ago, it caused
tremendous fear in South Carch
lina. A description of it has been
given by a South Carolina plant
er who wrote:
"I was suddenly awakened by
the most distressing cries that
ever fell on my ears. While
earnestly listening for the cause
I heard a faint voice near the
door, calling my, name. I arose
and, taking my sword, stood at

the door. At this moment I
heard the same voice still be
seeching me to rise and saying,
'Oh my God, ff.e world is on
fire!' I then opened the door,
and it is difficult to say which
excited me most the awful
ness of the scene, or the distress
ing cries of the Negroes. Up
wards of a hundred lay pros
es trate on the ground, some speech
less, arsome with the bitterest
cries. But with their hands
raised, imploring God to save
the world and them. The scene
was truly awful: for never did
rain fall much thicker than the
meteors fell towards the earth:
east, west, north and south, it
was the same."
Although such showers seem
unusual it is surprising how
often clusters pass through our
atmosphere particularly now
that they can be tracked in good
weather or foul, by the dark of
the moon or the light; and more
important during thhe intense
brightness of day.
Like jet planes streaking
through the stratosphere leav
ing vapor trails, meteors too
leave giant trails which can be
picked up by radar. They are
formed of intensely heated gas
produced by the meteors which
may travel at speeds often ex
ceeding 100,000 miles an hour.
Particularly if they hit our at
mosphere head-on, going against
the earth's direction. Then the
combined speed can be as much
as 160.000 miles an hour fast
enough to take one from the
earth to the moon in 90 minutes.
Half-Inch in Diameter
Even though the light is
bright briefly outshining all
the stars put together, the
meteor is seldom more than half
an inch in diameter. In fact,
such "giants" are quite rare.
Perhaps a thousand such hit the
entire earth every hour.
Although this may sound like
a large number it isn't. Remem
ber the earth is about 197,000,
000 square miles and every hour
it carves a tunnel through space
8,000 miles in diameter and
66,000 miles long the di
ameter of the earth and its
speed through space.
The total number of meteors
of all sizes which hit the earth
every hour is enormous run
ning into the billions, says
Arthur C. Clarke in Holiday.
But the vast majority are small
er than grains of sand.
Of these, about ten each day
are too large to be consumed by
the friction of their passage
through the atmosphere and so
they manage to reach the earth's
surface intact. Because these are
only samples we earthlings have
of matter outside the earth,
naturally we study them close
ly.
To look at one, it gives the
appearance of having been
thrown out of a slag heap. And
that is what it is, cosmic slag
possibly part of the debris left
over when the planets were
formed some three or four bil
lion of years ago, says Clarke,
or possibly a fragment of a
planet which once existed be
tween Mars and Jupiter and
exploded.
Unprepossessing as this lump
may seem, yet it may contain
a clue to our weather ... a sub
ject we'll discuus another time

Defense Continues
In Sherry Fong Trial
Portland OPt The defense
today continued to present its
case in the secod degree murder
trial of Sherry Fong, 26-year-old
Portland woman accused of
the 1954 death of a baby sitter,
Diane Hank, 16.
Attorney John P. Hannon said
he will call Mrs. Fong to the
stand before resting his case.
The state rested its case Tues
day after presenting 51 wit
nesses and entering 99 exhibits
into evidence. State Attorney
Robert Christ said the state's
theory was that the Hank girl

Knight came within California,

sure was exterted" as high as

public will be given a "good,
clearcut choice" in the California
gubernatorial race.

in 11 southern states Jan. 20 in
an effort to double the Negro
vote in Dixie. Dr. Martin Luther
King, Montgomery, Ala., bus
