Area Chapler of
Appraisers Society
is Being Formed

Society of Residential Apprais
ers, is being organized in this
area, according to Walter Jones,
Medford, temporary chairman.
The Southern Oregon Chapter
will include professional ap
praisers, bankers, title insur
ance companies, realtors and
salesmen, savings and loan of
ficials, and others interested.
About 50 delegates from Sa
lem, Roseburg, Coos Bay, Grants
Pass, Ashland and Medford are
expected at the first dinner meet
ing of the group at Henry's Broil
er at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov.
12, Jones said. Speaker at the
dinner will be the president of
the . Salem chapter, which is
sponsoring organization of the
Southern Oregon chapter.
Purpose of the society is im
provement of real estate evalu
ation standards and professional
competency. The society is di
vided into two classes, the sen
ior ratings, or professional ap
praisers, and associate members,
other groups or persons inter
ested in joining. There are about
3.000 senior rating members in
the United States and Canada.
William R. Kiernan of Rose
burg is temporary secretary, and
Everett Bartholomew, Medford,
is temporary treasurer.

at Eastern State Hospital's secur
ity building were transferred to
the State Penitentiary at Walla
Walla Wednesday as officers be
gan a room-by-room "shake
down." Edwin Thomas and James Ei
land, leaders of the uprising
which lasted almost nine hours,
were transferred on orders of
Dr. Garrett Heyns, state direc
tor of institutions.
"These two may need treat
ment," Heyns said, "but they
obviously don't fit into the treat
ment program at Eastern State."
He called the two men, both
former state prison convicts in
volved in a riot there two years
ago, neurotic but not psychot
ic." Fourteen State Patrolmen and
10 sheriff's officers were con
ducting the "shakedown" search
for any hidden weapons.
