iTruman To Speak
At Los Angeles
Los Angeles (IP) Former
President Harry S. Truman ar
rived today for his major ad
dres at te fund-raising Jefferson
Jackson Day Democratic dinner
Friday night at the Biltmore
Bowl.
Truman was greeted upon his
arrival at Union Station by
Democratic National Commit
teeman Paul Ziffren and other
Democratic leaders.
He promised a speech "of ma
jor significance" for the S100 a
plate dinner. Attorney General
Edmund G. Brown, who an
nounced his candidacy for the
governorship Wednesday, also
will speak.

the last laugh on her pursuers, although she was finally captured near Cairo, N. Y.
The two-ton circus elephant, who enjoyed 13 days of freedom, had been trapped
earlier in the day, but broke loose and lumbered back into the woods.
Graham Crusade

tally on attendance at Billy Gra
ham's New York crusade meet
ings showed the evangelistic ef
fort attracted 2,145,000 persons,
it was announced Wednesday.
The evangelist's staff also re
vealed that 60,577 persons re
corded "decisions for Christ" in
the course of the crusade, which
began May 15 in Madison Square
Garden and officially closed last
Sunday with a rally in the Polo
Grounds.
A spokesman for Graham said
the evangelist had cancelled all
angagements for the next three
weeks to 0 to his Montreat, N.
C home and recover from a
knee injury suffered when he
was butted by a ram.

listic "team" will go without
him to San Francisco for a min
isterial seminar Nov. 11 to pre
pare for a crusade in the Cow
Palace due to begin April 27.
Graham will also hold a series
of evangelistic meetings in the
Caribbean area in January, a
crusade in Charlotte, N. C, next
fall, and another in Australia in
early 1959.

Miss Drake to

Gold Hill Miss Rose Drake
will leave Sunday for Portland,
where she will attend swearing
in ceremonies Nov. 4 for her
induction into the Air Force.
She will go by plane from Port
land to Los Angeles, Calif., then
to San Antonio, Texas, where
she will begin eight weeks basic
training at Lackand Air Force
base near San Antonio.
Miss Drake recently return
ed from Portland where she had
taken her physical examination
Oct. 16 and 17. She received
orders to report for induction
in a letter Oct. 28 from TSgt.
Florence Green, Portland re
cruiting officer.
Miss Drake is the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Drake
of Gold Hill. She attended the
Gold Hill elementary school and
graduated from Crater High
school in 1957.

of Mr. and Mrs. Francis H. Greg
ory of the Upper Applegate rd.
will accompany Miss Drake to
Portland where she to will be
inducted into the Air Force. She
is a graduate of the Jacksonville
High school.

Pomona Grange
The Oct. 26 meeting of Jack
son County Pomona Grange was
held at the Phoenix Grange hall
with Master Robert Bitterling
presiding. All officers and com
mittee chairmen were present
except Ceres Grace Buck and
Executive Committeeman Wil
liam Howes.
As William Howes has attend
ed only one meeting this year
and has moved from the district,
his chair was declared vacant
and Wilfred Davies of Eagle
Point was elected to Teplace him
on the executive committee.
A distinguished guest was
State Deputy Henry Hendrick
son, who spoke on "Operation
Forward for '58," urging each
subordinate master to appoint a
steering committee to handle it.
He also urged the appointment
of calling committees in each
Grange to make calls, in teams,
on inactive members and pros
pective members. He also report
ed that Grange membership is
showing a net gain nationally.
Reports Heard
Informative reports were
heard from the standing commit
tee chairmen. Arnold Bohnert,
reporting on agriculture, stated
hay prices are down S10 from
last year; but oats are selling for
$45 a ton, barley for $48. corn
for $58. and wheat for $70. An
order for 61 tons of Talent
Alfalfa seed to be delivered to
Greece probably cannot be filled
due to damage to seed in the
rainy weather.
Herb Carlton stated prices are
tip on livestock, top prices at the
Oct. 22 sale being 25 cents.
According to Delmar Smith,
plans are being formulated for
a tri-state bee conference to be
held in Pendleton Dec. 5-7,
drawing growers from Wash
ington, Idaho and Oregon. Most
recent development in using
honey is a honey-vanilla ice
cream produced by an Idaho
manufacturer, reputedly creat
ing quite a sensation.
Chester Jensen stated the
dairyman is making more money
now; with 7 per cent fewer cows
he is getting a 2 per cent in
crease in milk production. After
a difficult growing year. Dee
Hendrickson reported the or-
chardists were getting good
prices on pears in the open
market, with a short crop in
Europe stimulating the export
market on small sizes of pears.
Social Granges
Attendance count showed "6
present representing the follow
ing Granges: Enterprise, Gold
Hill, Live Oak, Eagle Point,
Sams Valley, Central Point, Bell
view, Phoenix,- Roxy Ann, Up
per Rogue, Upper Applegate,
and Griffin Creek.
During the lecture hour, piano
solos were played by the two
little Bolz girls from Phoenix;
and several lively numbers were
rendered by G. E. Cowdon of
Eagle Point on his violin. On
the serious side was a debate on
the subject "Is There a Future
for the Family-Size Farm," with
William Darby and Melvin Lat
tie upholding the affirmative
and Frank Hall and Chester Jen
sen speaking for the negative;
but the judges declared it a
draw. A humorous skit by Roy
and Belle LeVander of Griffin
Creek concluded the program.

and Millie Kay McCauley. Win
ners reported by Edith Poe, HEC
district chairman, were as fol

which will go to Portland in the
state contest.
Describes Exhibit
Delmar Smith described the
Pomona exhibit for those who
had not seen it at the Town and
Country Holiday or at the state
fair. He expressed surprise at
the number of people who
stopped in the booth at the state
fair who did not know where
Medford is. With better coopera
tion from the valley he felt a
prize-winning exhibit could be
put on next year.
Resolutions passed included
approval of one from Live Oak
Grange opposing the present pro
posed county . subdivision ordi
nance. Also approved was a reso
lution from Baker district Po
mona favoring an accelerated
method of depreciation on state
income tax reports to conform
with that on federal income tax
reports. Also passed was a reso
lution requiring the assessor to
include a description of the land
on tax bills.
Announcements were made of
a dinner to be given by Griffin
Creek Grange Nov. 3. and of a
pie social at Eagle Point Grange
Nov. 16.
Next meeting of Jackson
County Pomona Grange will be
at 10 a.m. Jan. 25, at Roxy
Ann Grange.

Knapp will assist Mrs. Burnett
with serving.
Mrs. Lloyd Dusenberry, chair
man of the Christmas Seal sale,
said ;that members will prepare
seals for mailing at this meeting.
Mrs. Knapp recently attended a
seal sale luncheon at the Red
Cross building in Medford.
Crater High Parent - Teachers
association officially opened its
membership drive in conjunction
with "back to school and meet
your teachers," at the first meet
ing of the unit Monday, Oct. 28,
at the Crater High school.
A total of -140 memberships
were sold at this time by Clinton
Charley, membership chairman
and Mrs. Robert Pfaff cochair
man, who were assisted by Mrs.
Morris Frink. The committee has
set its goal this year, to have
both parents of every high school
student an active member
through enrollment. The success
of the association depends on its
membership.
Several parents outside Cen
tral Point have been appointed
by the membership committee to
assist with the campaign, which
wiL continue until the third
week in November. In Gold
Hill parents interested are asked

and explained to the group some
of the steps necessary in the for
mation of a similar association
for Jackson county.
Freighter Repair To Cost About $50,000

repairs to the bow of the Fin
nish freighter Korsholma which!
was damaged when it struck a
railroad bridge protection pier
here last Saturday night will
cost about $50,000 agents for the
ship said today.
It was expected to take about
10 dayt to build a false bulk-j
head and temporary bow for the
vessel.
Capt. E. B. Grunstad, pilot on
the vessel, testified at a Coast
Guard hearing Wednesday that
he ordered the helmsman to
swing the ship to starboard but
that the ,vessel continued to
port. The helmsman said he un
derstood the pilot to order the
ship swung to port. No one was
hurt in the collision.
Permanent repairs to the ship
will cost about $150,000. it was
estimated. Damage to the rail
road bridge was estimated at
$70,000.
Lake Ontario is the most east
erly of the Great Lakes.

Two local young men, who
are attending Oregon State col
lege, arrived home Friday to at
tend the home coming football
game. They were Bruce Burnett,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin
Burnett, and Jerry Golden, son
of Mr. and Mrs. William Golden.
They returned to Corvallis after
spending the weekend with their
parents.
Sp2 Roger Genwa left for Ft.
Lewis, Wash., Oct. 23 following
a month's leave which he spent
in the home of his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. John F. Genaw, on
Maple lane, and his brothers,
John and Reginald. Roger also
visited another brother and his
family, Mr. and Mrs. Richard
Genaw, and daughter, Sandra,
also of Gold Hill.
He planned to leave Ft. Lewis
soon for Alaska, where he will
report for duty with the Army
for one year.
