Some Women Should Not
Be X-rayed
I recently read of experi
ments carried out by Dr. Ernest
Furchgott, of the University of
Tennessee, on
the dosage of
x - rays a rat

when she may be pregnant.
Actually, it is probably unwise
for her to have such an examina
tion in the 10 days before men
struation, if there is much
chance of her having just be
come pregnant. X-rays are likely
to be most harmful to an un
born child in the first month,
when the little brain is forming
and might be injured. In the
later months of pregnancy, the
fetus can better stand an ordi
nary dose of x-rays such as is
involved in making a diagnostic
examination. But if I were medi
cally in charge of a pregnant
woman, I would not permit her
to be examined with x-rays again
and again by a series of doctors
as sometimes happens nowa
days when no one can agree on
a diagnosis.
As I have said in a previous
column, I cannot get panicky
about the ordinary x-ray ex
aminations that have to be made
when persons are ill. I have
never seen a case in which I
thought they had done harm.
I have known well dozens of
x-ray men . who, during their
lifetime have daily absorbed
x-rays, and among these ac
quaintances I cannot remember
anyone w-ho suffered from any
generalized disease that could be
ascribed to an excessive amount
of radiation.
Men Making More
Family Purchases
Chicago (IP) Men are making
more of the family purchases in
western states, according to a
study made by the Foundation
for Management Research. West
ern men today make about 40
per cent of the actual retail pur
chases, whereas they made only
30 per cent five j'ears ago, the
foundation said.
The survey was made of 5.000
families in Colorado, Wyoming,
Kansas, Utah, New Mexico,
Idaho and Nebraska.
The rise in male purchasing
wa attributed to two reasons:
The shorter work week has
given men more leisure time for
hobbies which necessitate buy
ing sornething.
A larger proportion of wives
now hold jobs leaving them less
time for shopping.
Plane Forced To Land
In Field Near Rickreall
Rickreall, Ore., (IP! A Cali
fornia Air National Guard
plane crash-landed in a wheat
field near here Tuesday, but the
pilot and two crewmen escaped
injury.
Maj. -Milton R. Graham, Fres
no, Calif., the pilot, said he was
forced to crash land the C-47
transport when both engines
failed at 3000 feet. The crash
caused extensive damage to the
plane.

In all this excitement of late
about the supposedly harmful
effects of having our chest or
our teeth x-rayed occasionally,
most of the discussants appeared
not to know that every day and
all day and all night all of us
are being bombarded from space
with the cosmic radiation which
is exceedingly powerful. If we
can stand this, we can stand an
occasional dose of radiation
given during an x-ray examina
tion. Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers
will understand that it would
be impossible for him to answer
requests for information or to
attempt to diagnose by mail.

Oregon Flu Cases
Highest in History
Portland OP) Reported cases
of influenza reached their high
est level in Oregon's history last
week, according to a report Tues
day from the State Board of
Health and deaths resulting
from the virus mounted to three
in the state. Two deaths were re
ported from Fairview home for
the mentally retarded at Salem,
along with an earlier flu-caused
death in Portland.
The board now has reports of
5815 cases.
Authorities at Fairview said
the second death attributed to
complications of influenza in
volved a 13-year-old Portland
boy. Earlier a 40-year-old indi
vidual had died of complications
following flu.
