rushchev's Bloodless Coup Seen as Another Step

chev has won another bloodless
coup that signifies the beginning
of virtually unrestrained one
man dictatorship in the Soviet
Union,
Diplomatic sources in London
said his victory over Red Army
Hoard of Czarist
Police Documents
Excite Researchers
Stanford, Calif. TP) Ex
cited researchers pored today
over a hoard of Czarist secret
police documents whose exist
ence has been unknown for more
than 30 years.
The two-ton hoard of docu-'
ments represents the Paris office
file of the Okhrana, as the old
imperial Russian secret police
was known.
The Okhrana was set up in
1883 and was closed in 1917
with the downfall of the Czarist
government. During its lifetime,
it kept tabs on Russian revolu
tionaries in Western Europe.
The Hoover Institution on the
Stanford University campus dra
matically disclosed the where
abouts of the file Tuesday. It
was shipped to this country in
1926 in 16 sealed packing cases,
bound with wire and lead seals.

A! Mountain Site
Of Airplane Crash
Flagstaff, Ariz. OP) The Co
conino county sheriff's office re
ported today that Air Force per
sonnel had recovered bodies of
all 16 crew members of a giant
four-engine KC97 tanker plane
which crashed Into Gray moun
tain 40 miles north of here Tues
day.
Eight bodies were recovered
Tuesday, but those of the other
crew members were not recov
ered before dark. This morning,
the sheriff's office said the
bodies of the others had been
found "scattered over a wide
area."
Plane Flying Low
The big plane, from Walker
Air Force Base, Roswell, N. M.,
crashed Tuesday morning, ap
parently while flying at a low
altitude. The mountain actually
is a butte of about 1,200 feet,
on a plateau.
The plane crashed about half
way up the side of the mountain,
possibly during an unusually
heavy morning fog. The wreck
age was not sighted until Tues
day afternoon.
Indian police from nearby
Tuba City were the first to reach
the scene.
Near Canyon Crash Site
The crash scene, 20 miles from
the nearest paved highway, is
about 50 miles from where two
giant airliners collided in the
air and plunged into Grand Can
yon, killing 128 persons, June
30. 1956.
The plane, used to refuel jet
aircraft at high altitudes, left
Roswell on a "routine training
flight."
Sheriff Cecil Richardson re
turned to the scene today. He
reported wreckage over a wide
ly scattered area,, with only the
tail section distinguishable.
Merrill Shooting

Hignite, 26. pleaded guilty to
two counts of second degree mur
der Tuesday before Circuit
Judge David R. Vandenberg, who
set Monday, Nov. 4, for sen
tencing. Hignite had waived prelim
inary hearing and also the right
to be heard by the grand jury.
The charges grew out of the
fatal shooting on the evening of
Oct. 12 of James Flaugh, 48,
and his wife. Lillie Pearl Flaugh,
53, both of Merrill. The Flaughs
were taking care of Hignite's
daughter, Cheryl Ann, 2, who
had been left in their charge by
his estranged wife, Leeta Ray
Hignite. Police said the Flaughs
were shot when they refused to
let Hignite take the child away.

Marshal Georgi Zhukov makes
him the future Stalin, the victor
in a momentous struggle for su
preme power in the Kremlin.
These beliefs were further
borne out by Khrushchev's own
statement Tuesday night de
scribed by diplomats as "arro
gant" that he could now offer
Zhukov a new job in line with
his experience and qualification.
But the signs were that the
"largest Russian police archive
outside the Soviet Union."
A Surprise
The Reds thought the files had
been destroyed. It will come as
a surprise to them that they are
in California awaiting study by
scholars, historians and others.
"Already we have found files
of Trotsky. Molotov and Pilsud
ski," said Witold Sworakowski,
assistant director of the institute.
"I have no doubt that we shall
find material on Lenin, Stalin
and other leading men of the
revolution."
Sworakowski said the file will
"unquestionably prove to be a
mother lode of knowledge of the
crucial years leading to the over
throw of the Romanovs in
March, 1917."
So far, seven of the 16 boxes
have been opened. It will take a
year or more just to sort the
papers.
More Secrets
Rothwell refused to say just
how the files were shipped from
Okhrana headquarters at 79 Rue
de Grenelle, Paris, since some
of those who' helped are still
living.
But he did say that the ship
ment was carried out under the
direction of Basil Maklakoff, the
last pre-Communist Russian am
bassador to Paris. He began
smuggling the documents out in
1924. They reached the United
States two years later.
Maklakoff stipulated that the
packing cases must remain
closed until three months after
his death. He died in Switzer
land last July at the age of 86.
Maklakoff had told the Reds he
burned the documents.

Armstrong Ready

day night he is ready to take his
trumpet to Russia "anytime"
since the U.S. government did
the "right thing" in the Little
Rock integration crisis.
Armstrong had rejected in no
uncertain terms an invitation
from the State Department to
visit Russia shortly after the
eruption of the integration crisis
in Arkansas.
"President Eisenhower firmed
up and did the right thing in
sending federal troops," Arm
strong said. , "I'm ready to go to
Russia anytime."

Family Perishes
Pickford, Mich. OP An 11-year-old
girl leaped from a sec
ond story porch early today and
then watched in horror as her
mother, father and six brothers
and sisters died in a blaze which
destroyed their small frame
house.
Rose Carrick, the lone surviv
or of the tragic fire, was taken
to War Memorial Hospital at
Sault Ste. Marie for treatment
of a deep leg gash suffered in
her leap for life.
The charred bodies of her par
ents. Vern Carrick, 45, an un
employed lumberjack, and
Irene, 30, and her brothers and
sisters, Dennis, 9; Harold, 7; Nor
ma, 5; Joy, 3; Daniel, 18 months,
and James, 2 months, were col
lected in a basket and brought
to a funeral home here.

dek said Mrs. Carrick still was
clutching her infantson when
her body was located.
The fire was believed to have
been caused by a wood heater
in the living room of the house,
located six miles south of here
in Michigan's upper peninsula.

with the best costume. Costumes,
however, are not necessary, Miss
Hall said.

scientists that they are not as
much concerned about the U. S.

The scientists, he said, attach
great importance to awakening
of Americans to the need of
turning out more scientific grad
uates. The President said the scien
tists also attach great importance
to federal aid to research if
needed.
Eisenhower indicated that he
would devote one of his forth
coming major speeches to this
40 Persons Examined
In Annual Clinic
Forty people were examined
in the annual tuberculosis clinic
held recently at the Jackson
county health department, ac
cording to Dr. A. E. Merkel,
health officer.
Dr. Gerhardt Boost, tubercu
losis specialist at the state hos
pital was examining physician.
Expenses for the clinic are pro
vided by Christmas Seal funds
by the Jackson county public
health association as part of
their tuberculosis control pro
gram.
Dr. Boost said most people
entering the tuberculosis hospi
tal have moderately or far ad
vanced stages of the disease. He
said if the infection could be
discovered
earlier, the treat
ment would be more effective
and the hospital stay shorter.
He said the chest x-ray is the
best known method of detecting
the early cases.
The x-ray clinic is open each
Thursday at Sacred Heart hos
pital between 2 and 5 p.m. and
the first Wednesday of each
month between 7 and 9 p.m
with volunteer help provided by
the Providence guild of the hos
pital.
