Newborn Quadruplets Get
24-Hour Watch by Nurses
Elgin, N. D. Wl Day-old
quadruplet sisters, under 24-hour
watch by hospital nurses to
guard the spark of life in their
tiny bodies, sported names in
rhyme Saturday.
Peter Meier, their father, had
said he wanted to get over the
"shock" of the sudden acquisi
tion of four more children be
fore he chose names. But his
wife, Josephine, 32, talked to
him Friday night and they have
agreed the children would be
Charlene, Marlene, Arlene and
Jolene.
The girls, weighing from 2
pounds 12 ounces to 3 pounds,
5V2 ounces at birth were placed
in incubators in the small hos
pital here. At first they were
paired in two incubators, then
were transferred to individual
quarters.
Chances Only Fair
Dr. R. E. Hankins, who said
their chances for survival were
"only fair," ordered the constant
watch on the children. A hos
pital attendant said early Satur
day they were "holding their
own."
One of the girls, however, the
"weakest" at birth, remained
weaker than her three sisters, the
attendant said. She did not, how
ever, know which one it was
by name.

Increase Recorded
In State Visitors
Salem HP Oregon has had
a 92 per cent increase in num
ber of out-of-state visitors dur
ing the past ten years, accord
ing to figures released Saturday
by William M. Tugman of Reeds
port, chairman of the Advisory
Committee of the state's tour
ist promotion agency.
Tourists increased from 1,839,
000 in 1948 to 3,539,000 in 1957.
Total number of visitors this
year established a record for the
industry in Oregon.
"In contrast to the Oregon
system, which counts only out-of-state
can staying here three
days or longer," Tugman said.
"Some states projeet their to
tal on the basis of all out-of-state
vehicles, even those stay
ing one day, whether or not they
carry tourists. They make no
distinction between business
and pleasure travel.
"Still others regularly include
in their annual figures the trav
el within their states by their
own people," he concluded.

Weeks' Testimony
Dropped In Trial
Portland (TP Circuit Judge
Martin W. Hawkins Friday dis
missed the testimony of Kathleen
Lucille Weeks in the Maloney
vice conspiracy trial here and or
dered the jury to disregard her
remarks.
The woman had been called
ai a defense witness to tell of
an affidavit she signed in". the
presence of Defense Attorney
Howard Lonergan, Mayor Terry
Schrunk, County Detective
George Minielly, and a court re
porter. Mrs. Weeks repudiated
the affidavit, asserting that she
had been frightened into signing
it by threats that she would be
committed to an institution as
a narcotics addict. In the affi
davit she told how she was
shown that tape recordings
could be altered.
Thomas E. Maloney of Seattle
and Spokane is on trial on a
charge of conspiring to profit
from gambling in Multnomah
county.
State's attorney John D. Nich
ols protested that Mrs. Weeks'
testimony was irrelevant to the
Maloney case and Judge Hawk
ins told the jury it should dis
regard her remarks in connec
tion with affidavit.
Minielly, Schrunk and Lone
gran had all been indicted for
conspiracy to commit subordin
ation of perjury in connection
with the Weeks affidavit. The
charges were subsequently drop
ped by the state on grounds
there was not enough evidence
to try the cases.
The Maloney trial goes into
its sixth week Monday. It was in
recess Friday.
