Self Help For Arthritics
I recently read a splendid
book, entitled "Overcome Ar
thritis" (Prentice Hall). It was
written by William Kitay, in
collaboration with the Arthrit
is and Rheumatism Foundation,
which was founded by Mr. Floyd
B. Odium, of California. Because
the book was written with the
help of the country's leading ex
perts on arthritis, the material
is authentic. There is no bun
come in it. We read, for instance,
that there is no diet that cures
arthritis, and there is no medi
cine that we can count on to
cure the disease. Many people
get over a spell of arthritis
while taking some quack diet
or some medicine, but this does
not mean that the diet or the
medicine did anything, because
arthritis is a disease which of
ten tends to come and go by
itself.
Thousands of arthritics read
ing this new book will be much
helped by the many useful hints
they will find in the several
chapters on the things that a
patient can do for himself, and
his family can do for him.
One of the the best chapters
is the last one which contains
a list of all the clinics through
out the United States that spec
ialize in the treatment of arth
ritis. This should help many
unhappy, puzzled people, who,
when arthritis floors them, don't
know where to turn to find a
specialist. The average physi
cian and even the average in
ternist has not had special train
ing in the treatment of arthritis.
I know I haven't had such train
ing and so I send my patients
with severe arthritis to an ex
pert in this field. Millions of
persons with mild forms of ar
thritis get along fairly well with
out much treatment besides per
haps aspirin and soaking in a
hot bath.
Help for Paralyzed Persons
I have also read a splendid
booklet of 38 pages a "Prim
er for Paraplegics (paralyzed
from some segment of the body
down) and Quadriplegics (both
arms and both legs paralyzed)
prepared by Dr. S. S. Bluestone,
and put out by Dr. Howard Rusk
and his Institute of Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation,
New York University-Bellevue
Medical Center. Every person
who is now lying paralyzed on
a bed, and perhaps feeling hope
less, should send 50 cents for a
copy of this booklet. It can fire
him with enthusiaism, showing
as it does, that he could be
trained to get up out of bed
and into a wheelchair and back
into a salary-paying job.
Whenever I am in New York
and have a little time, it is a
thrill to go to Dr. Rusk's hos
pital and to see there the won
derful work that he and his as
sociates are doing. They take
these paralyzed persons and
teach them quickly how to get
back into life, getting about,
taking care of themselves, and
earning a living.

of his being alarmed and upset
over his experience.
Club to Offer Signs

will again provide "Do Not Dis
turb" signs for the Halloween
season.
A sign on the lawn informs
the trick-or-treaters that an aged
or ill person is in that home and
should not be disturbed. Anyone
wishing to have the use of one
of these signs, should call SPring

of McLoughlin, said. Members of
the Letterman's club will place
the signs on Oct. 28 and 29, and
collect them after Halloween.
There is no charge for the
service. Students of McLoughlin
have furnished and placed the
signs for 12 years.
