Richard S. McCutchen has
turned in his dog tags, become a
civilian and gone to work as a
salesman.
While a Marine, McCutchen
became something of a national
hero two years ago when his
knowledge of cooking won him
the first $64,000 quiz jackpot in
broadcasting history. His mental
exertions in the isolation booth
tantalized millions of television
viewers and whetted many an
appetite.
Life has changed since then
for the 30-year-old ex-Marine.
On Sept. 23, McCutchen start
ed work at Galion, Ohio, as a

Seward H. Mott planned a city
and came back after 15 years to
see it finished, with 25,000 popu
lation. "In the history of the world,
few men have had this thrill, I
suppose," said the 67-year-old
Washington, D.C., engineer after
a tour of Midwest City, an in
corporated suburb cf Oklahoma
City.
In 1942, Mott helped a local
realtor, William P. Atkinson, lay
out the plan for Midwest City.
Mott, then a high official with
the Federal Housing Administra
tion, said he didn't dream he
would live to see it finished.
When he last came here, in 1945,
Mdwest City was burgeoning but
far from finished.
'I believe it had about 10,000
population then," Mott said.
"But now it is by far the largest
community ever planned and
completed under a single concept
in so short a time."
Atkinson, who invited vMott
back to help plan additions to
the city, predicts Midwest City
will be Oklahoma's third largest
community within another 10
years. The nearness of Tinker
Air Force base, a mammoth
world-wide supply depot is no
longer the main magnet here,
Atkinson said.

"We originally planned Mid
west City as a town for the mid
dle classes, with quiet streets
where kids can play in safety,"
said Atkinson, "and that is still
its main appeal."
Mott, interviewed after seeing
the town, said his biggest sur
prise was to find several neigh
borhoods containing homes cost
ing from S25.000 to S35,000.
'We never figured they would
be here," the planner said. But
so many advantages were includ
ed in the original plan that they
found a ready sale."
Midwest City, located 12 miles
southeast of Oklahoma City, was
almost uninhabited prairie be
fore Atkinson launched it as a
war housing project. It now
boasts 10 playgrounds, six ele
mentary schools, a parochial
school, two junior highs, a high
school and 22 churches.
"Twenty-two churches, think
of that," Mott said "for people
living where none lived only 15
years ago."
A new shopping center Atkin
son and Mott have dreamed up
will permit doubling or tripling
of Midwest City's six-square-mile
area during the coming 15
years, they predicted.

the new U. S. Steel works on the
Deleware River in Pennsylvania.

Cutchen says the offer he re
ceived from company Vice Presi
dent Herbert T. Cobey was too
good to turn down for it present
ed a challenging opportunity in
a field that interested him.
In his first weeks on the job,
McCutchen commuted 50 miles
daily between Galion and subur
ban Columbus, where he lived
with his wife, Betsy, and three
daughters, Sherrill, 7; Anne, 5,

However, he has since found a
place in Galion and now plans to
buy a home and settle in this
community of 10,000.
Fairless Hills, by comparison,
will have a population of 8,000
to 10,000, he said.

recently laid out the San Manuel
townsite in. Pinal county, Arizo
na. He has had similar projects
in Illinois, Kentucky, North
Carolina, Georgia and Califor
nia. But, -he said, none of them
matches Midwest City in rate of
growth of potential.
"Here all services and ameni
ties of a model community have
been at work on a far greater
scale than you will find any
where in this country," he
added. "Coming back after 12
years, it's hard to believe. But
here it is; I've seen it."

Winner Gives
Life in Ohio
McCutchen said his success on
television played no part in his
decision to leave the Marines
When he began appearing on the
celebrated quiz show Aug. 16,
1955, he was a naval ROTC in
structor at Ohio State University
in Columbus.
He recalled that his appear
ances on the show, which culmi
nated in his triumph on Sept. 13,
did little to change his life, ex
cept for the phone calls.
Goaded for Bear -
"One time I got a call in the
middle of the night from a hunt
er who wanted to know how to
prepare bear steaks," he said.
The decision to leave the serv
ice was made last August and
McCutchen said he did all he
could to avoid publicity at the
time.

of more attractive offers from
private industry. I don't want to
add to their troubles. The Marine
Corps has been very good to
me.
He added that most of hs life
has been spent in a military set
ting. His father is a retired na
val captain. McCutchen himself
joined the Navy at 17 for five
years and then spent eight more
years in the Marines.
The former Marine, a native of
Long Beach, Calif., said he was
very happy with is new career,
for it gave him more time to pur
sue his hobbies of hunting, fish
ing and, of course, cooking.
But in recent weeks, cooking
has been more than a hobby for
McCutchen.
His wife fell and broke her leg
a few weeks ago, making it nec
essary for hubby to handle the
kitchen chores.

Sarnoff Raps
Pay Television
Pittsburgh OP Robert W.
Sarnoff, president of the Na
tional Broadcasting Co., said to
day that pay television "is hos
tile to the public interest."
"The public would have to
pay for entertainment now free;
and in the process might lose
all the other benefits of free
television." Sarnoff said.
Sarnoff said that pay TV
would be able to use box office
revenue to outbid free television
for programs, even if the pay
system had smaller audiences.
He said this would result in
"a movement of the major at
tractions from free to pay tele
vision." "Instead of being available to
everyone without charge, the
programs would be available
only to the minority of the pub
lic willing and able to pay for
them," he said.
