The Search for a Cure -for
Cancer
I keep getting letters from
good people who are distressed
and sometimes angry because
they feel that
their favorite
cancer quack
is being treat
e d u n fairly.
They say the
the medical
profession will
not give his
prescription a
trial. Actually,
Dr Alvarez the Food and
Drug Administration have
checked his drug, and if it had
been found to contain anything
new or promising, they would
have tested it. The trouble is
that the most-often-sold quack
cancer remedy in this country is
plain tap water, and the next-most-commonly-used
ones con
tain potassium iodide and some
well-known herbs that used to
be prescribed by doctors as a
tonic, but are now largely, given
up as of little value.
To illustrate what this means:
If I were to announce that I was
curing cancer with a mixture of
table salt, baking soda and as
pirin, everyone who knows any
thing about drugs would say I
was either a fool or a crook. No
one with any knowledge of
drugs would bother to test my
supposed 'remedy." Most of the
cancer-quack drugs that have
ever been investigated have fal
len in this group of old and well
known drugs that obviously
could have no value in treating
cancer.
But if I were an able chemist
and were to make a new sub
stance related to some of those
that now cure cancer in mice,
but are a bit too toxic to be used
in man, the drug would immedi
ately be well tested on small
animals in one of the great can
cer research laboratories. The
men would be glad to try it out.
Contracts With Laboratories
I recently read in the Progress
Report of the huge Sloan-Ketter-ing
Institute for . Cancer Re
search, of New York City, that
they ave contracts with 62 re
search laboratories which keep
making new drugs and sending
them in for testing. In addition,
there are over a hundred groups
all over the world that send in
promising drugs for study. When
anything hopeful is discovered,
the information is immediately
shared with the othec great can
cer research centers throughout
the country.
A point that should help
many non-chemists to under
stand the situation is that a man
who is well-trained in the field
of pharmacology (study of medi
cines) can often say, after a
glance at the chemical structure
of a new substance, "That might
well be a better cortisone; that
might be a better morphine, that
might be a good local anesthetic,
that might be a good tranquili
zer, or that might cure cancer."
Drugs Put Together
One big point, which all good
people ought to see, is that the
day has passed when a cure for
cancer o? tuberculosis or insan
ity can be picked up somewhere
by a man with no knowledge of
chemistry. Drugs today are all
being made in research labora
tories where they are being
built up and put together by
skilled chemists men w:ho have
spent their life making drugs to
order for a special purpose. The
vaccines and antiserums, also,
have to be made in research lab
oratories by men and women
who have spent many years
working with viruses, germs,
chick embryos, and mice and
rats. The antibiotics are made by
men who work day after day
and year after year studying
molds shipped in to them from
all parts of the world.
Someone may ask, "But how
about the herbs? Might not one of
those have great medicinal
value? There is not much hope
of that because, for over 100
years, all herbs throughout the
world that have been used by
old women and medicine men
have been tested. Many of the
drugs wre use today were ex
tracted from herbs used by
aborigines. Morphine comes
from the poppy, cocaine comes
from the coca of Peru, quinine
comes from the bark of a tree
used by the Indians of South
America, and one of our tran
quilizers comes from an herb
grown in India.
Commonly, when good kind
people write to tell me of some
medicine that their grandmother
says will cure arthritis, I have to
say, "Sorry; that was well-tested
by doctors 50 years ago, and
given up as of little value."
Why Distress People Needlessly?
I was just reading the state
ment of a high school senior who
wrote a short thesis on"My Ma
jor Problem." He said "Often
my friends refer to me as

wallet on a train between Coun
cil Bluffs, Iowa, and here. The
billfold traveled on to Denver,
where it was found by a post
man. The postman turned it
over to an officer at Lowry AFB,
Denver. The officer mailed the
billfold to Sullivan at Lincoln
AFB.
