Many people write in great
distress because some x-ray man
has just found that they have a
tiny rupture in
the diaphragm
or mid -riff,
which allows
a little bit of
their stomach
to go up into
their chest.
This perhaps
happens only
when they lie
down, or

strain, or w-hen they have eaten
a big meal, or when they have
gotten' fat in their mid-region.
These people want to know
if they have to be operated on
immediately, and my answer is
that I doubt it. I haven't had one
of these persons operated on for
15 years or more; most of them
get by beautifully if they will
only have patience, and will not
eat toq much and get too fat. I've
seen many of them who were
considerably distressed by their
hernia who got well after taking
20 or 30 or 40 pounds off their
abdomen.
It is most important to try to
find out whether the patient's
symptoms are due to the hernia
or to something else. Often they
are due to nerves. I never pay
much attention to diaphragm
atic or hiatal hernia, unless the
patient says her trouble is pain
which comes after a big meal
when she reaches down to put
on her shoes or to pull on stock
ings. Then she is most likely
to push a bit of her stomach up
through the hole in the dia
phragm. In practically all of the
cases I see. the symtoms are ob
viously not those that could be
roduced by the hernia. In that
case, it would be unwise to op
erate to close the little hole. The
patient would be no better after
ward. Bursitis of the Shoulder
Many persons ask, "What is
bursitis of the shoulder?" A bur
sa is a little sac full of an oily
substance. The one near the
shoulder is under the muscle
that caps the shoulder. I suspect
that when it gets inflamed or
sore, this is part of a tendency
to arthritis. Sometimes aspirin
and physiotherapy help. When
the pain is severe and will not
respond to hysiotherapy I al
ways try x-ray treatment, be
cause this gives quick relief in
two out of three cases.
People ask if it is all right to
use the arm. Most certainly, yes.
If, for weeks, one does not use
the arm, it can get stiff, and then
adhesions in the joint may have
to be broken up. If I had a ten
