MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE SETEN
ormaT Human Being
Exceedingly Rare,
Professor Declares
By DELOS SMITH
United Press Science Editor
New York rtPI Scientists are
twitted by a distinguished col
league because they're always
cTionstTatincf statistically that
there is such a
creature as a
"normal" or
"standard" hu
man being.
The twitter
was Dr. Roger
J. Willi ams,
p r o f e ssor of
c h e m istry at
Delos Smith U n i versity of
Texas, and' former president of
the American Chemical society.
He demonstrated statistically
that if there is such a creature
he is exceedingly rare.
By one statistical calculation,
he showed there was one "stan
dard" person in every 1,024.
With another calculation, he
showed that if you assumed al
most all 99.8 per cent Americans
to be "normal," only one indi
vidual in five would actually
measure up to that broad stan
dard. . ,
Bodies Are Varied
Williams was having scienti
fic fun with statistics and statis
tical assumptions and also ad
vancing his own pet theory
which is that body chemistry is
as varied as there are bodies and
this variety make it impossible
for one individual to be the
same as any other individual.
What happens if you measure
human beings for more than one
thing. Now, said Williams, sup
pose you take only one measure
ment and apply it to a group of
human beings and assume that
the 50 per cen,t who come clos
est to measuring the same are
"normal" or "standard."
Having done that, apply the
measurements of five different
things to these "normals" and
you find that, statistically, only
0.03 per cent remain so. Apply
measurements of 100 different
things to them' and the percent
age of "normals" diminishes to
a barely detectable 0.0059 per
cent.
Studies Blood Plasma
Williams based himself statis
tically on precise measurements
of fats found in the blood plasma
of 65 men at different ages.
Seven chemical measurements
of these men's blood chemistry
were made. Any one measure
ment placed 33 in the middle or
median group usually consid
ered normal or standard.
But any two measurements
taken together reduced the nor
mals to 21 out of 65. Three
brought it down to 14, four to
10, five to eight, six to three
and seven measurements re
duced the normals among 65 to
only two.
UMC Dance Scheduled
Af YMCA Saturday
A United Medford Crusade
dance will be held for junior

according to Bob Johnson, gen
eral campaign chairman.
The dance is being sponsored
by the YMCA youth council,
and the program will be pro
vided by Harry Crofoot of
Swem's. Chaparones will be

man of the dance, and commit

Solon Warns Against
Satellite Hysteria
Phoenix Of) Sen. Barry
Goldwater, (R-Ariz.), has warned
against national "hysteria, just
because the Russians have lob
bed a basketball into outer space
that goes beep, beep, beep."
Goldwater, speaking to a
meeting of the Air Force assoc
iation here, said he was alarm
ed over the "panic" he has seen
among some of his colleagues
and residents in the eastern part
of the United States over Rus
sia's launching of the satellite
Sputnik.
North Long Beach, Calif.
OP) Three-year-old Stanley Ed
ward Phillips, found after a
three-hour nightime search, had
a ready excuse for his mommie.
"I followed a duck," he explained.
Wrong Number Given
Blame in Tot's Death
Chicago (IP) A wrong num
ber caused a baby's death.
Mrs. Judith Schlaeger w
bathing her two-month-old son in
the kitchen sink when the tele
phone rang.
She put the baby on the sink
drain board and went to answer
the call. It was a wrong num
ber. She returned to find the
baby's head and shoulders be
neath the water.
Firemen were summoned and
administered oxygen for 20 min
utes, but the baby was dead.
The hysterical mother wept
and repeated two words, again
and again:
"Wrong number . . . wrong
number."
