Home Mightier Than Satellite, McCall's Director Tells Women

It was one of Arthur B. Lang
lie's boys, down from the New
York head office of McCall's,
where the ex-governor of Wash
ington state runs the corpora
tion, who proceeded to provide
much-needed perspective.
'This first Congress on Better
Living is meeting in Washington
this week during one of the
most significant periods in his
tory," observed Camille Davied,
McCall's executive director, to
the delegates assembled.
"Throughout the world tonight
many people undoubtedly are
preoccupied with matters like
intercontinental ballistics, nu
clear waepons and space satel
lites. '"I have great respect for
atom power and satellites," ad
mitted the editor. '"But I have
more respect for a woman who
can build love and affection
and family warmth into four,
walls."
Home Thought Mightier
"Yes," said he after a Solom
on like weighting of the Great
Issues, "I think the home is
mightier than the satellite."
With no further concern for
Sputnik, the lady delegates put
their minds to Better Living and
reported concensus:
"The 100 delegates from all
over the country, acting as

spokesman for the nation's 50
million families, revealed an
overwhelming trend toward re
turning to the double bed as
an essential ingredient to wed
ded bliss.
"Seventy-eight per cent of the
delegates announced that they
share a double bed, and nine
per cent even have super-size
ones, as against . a meager 13
per cent who exist in the twin-

bedroom."
Salute To Theme
Whether the ladies were think
ing ahead to the coming era of
leisure, or simply reflecting the
fact that American suburbia is
full of tiny bedrooms hardly big
enough for twin beds, neverthe
less their finding represented
quite a salute to theme "togeth
erness." And this was supremely
pleasing to the sponsor of the
Congress, McCall's magazine,
whose hefty heart beats for "to
getherness" every month.
However, Mrs. Everett Sugar
baker understandably had to
abandon the principal in order
to attend the convention in
Washington. She left her 10 kids
back in Jefferson City, MO.
The greatest contribution yet
to be made to Better Living, as
seen from the female vantage
point, would be to find a way
to eliminate ironing. And anoth
er thing, not content simply to
move the furniture around (or
watch hubby put a shoulder to
the davenport), the gals want
movable walls in order to rear-
range theVhole place as family
needs (or their moods) change.
Sputnik May Hare Answer
While the double bed is fine
for wedded bliss, they said it
would be so much better if some
one could devise a way to permit
the wife to read without keep
ing the old man awake. Maybe
Sputnik will have some observa
tions from on high about that
one.
Right on the spiked heels of
the 100 delegates came the 200
directors of the General Federa
tion of Women's Clubs to the
nation's capital. They trooped
over to the Pentagon and heard
Gen. Nathan F. Twining, chair
man of the joint chiefs of staff,
in what might be called a les
son in "longer living."
"I believe that as long as we
maintain a strong military struc
ture the Soviets will be deterred
from attacking us," declared
Twining.
In a quick followup, Rear
Admiral C. O. Tribble had a
final precaution for the club
women. Said the admiral, "We
can't hide under the bed."
