THREE-SEVENTHS OF MEDFORD LINE
Comet players will be looking across at this
trio of Medford linemen this evening when
the Tornado is host to the Crater high foot
ball team. Left to right are End Tom Hamlin,
Tackle Tom Morris and Guard Dick Corum,
all probable starters for the Black Tornado.
They will seek a successful start for Med
ford's District 6 A-l crown defense. Tonight's
battle is the fifth in football between the two
schools. The Tornado has won the last three
engagements after an initial win by Comet
players in 1953.

eager and fired up Comet foot
ball eleven this evening on the
Medford Senior High school
turf. .
, Medford's Tornado, still weak
ened by illnesses which have
plagued the squad this week, is
host to Crater high in the South
ern Oregon conference opener
for the home club and the sec
ond mix in the circuit for the
visitor. Game time is 8:15 p.m.
Most of the 11 Tornado play
ers who missed drills this week
because of flu or virus infections
were reported on the mend by
Head Coach Fred Spiegelberg.
Just how much duty they'll be
able to see against the Comets
still was a matter of question
this morning. Biggest share of
those who have been sick were
on hand at yesterday's final
workout. But, while several were
in harness, the others were just
standing by and looking on.
Clark Absent
Skip Bennett, a breakaway
left halfback, was still missing
from the squad. Reserve quar
terback Jim Clark was absent
from yesterday's workout.
Among those back with the
crew yesterday were Centers
Jim Funston and Pat McLaugh
lin and Tackle Gary Winetrout,
who were in suit, and Halfback
Gerry Lyons and End Pete Ras
mussen, who watched from the
sidelines.
Crater, as of last night, didn't
have the sickness handicap ex
perienced by the Tornado. There
were a few colds which slowed
the efficiency of squad mem
bers. But Coach Leonard War
ren indicated that Guard George
Hunt, who has a strep throat,
likely would be the only one
missing the game.
Despite the illness hindrance,
Medford still enters the game as
favorite. The Tornado yet has
greater depth and has a larger
number of experienced players.
And its competition has been
tougher.
Confident Club
While the Crater club has
been relegated to role of underdog.-
the Comet cup actually is
brimming with confidence. The
close ruckus with Grants Pass
did much to bolster the morale
of the Central Point club. Coach
Warren reported the Comets
fired up, unafraid and determ
ined to "do the best they can
do." '
The Medford Tornado may be
somewhat physically down but
the spirit is good. "The boys
realize the importance of the
game and that Crater has a
c h a n c e," Spiegelberg said.
"They'll be out there de
termined."
Judging from the four past
conflicts between the two
schools tonight's ball game
should be an entertaining one
for fans. Crater has won only
once over Medford but has
played interesting ball in the
other conflicts even when the
Tornado victory margin was
lopsided.

week end, but only two games in
the Oregon Collegiate confer
ence will count in league stand

Sickness among Grants Pass
players has forced cancellation
of the Cavemen's football garne
scheduled for tonight against
Marshfield High of Coos Bay.
The non-league game was to have
been contested at Grants Pass
with Marshfield trying to extend
its string to 40 games without a
loss.
