New Respiratory
Ailments Reported
In Midwest Cities
By UNITED PRESS
New outbreaks of respiratory
ailments hit a number of mid
western cities today. In New
York, authorities warned that
about one million persons are
expected to be stricken with
Asian flu before the disease
runs its course.
Fort Wayne, Ind., and Normal
and Peoria, 111., were among the
latest cities to report "flu-type"
illnesses.
In Milwaukee, mass vaccina
tions for teachers were under
way to combat a flu epidemic
there, and another epidemic at
Grand Rapids, Mich., kept some
5,000 children home from school
Monday.
Decline in New York
Although the Asian flu epi
demic in New York showed a de
cline Monday for the fourth
straight day, Dr. Morris Green
berg, the city's preventable dis
ease director, warned that one
in every 10 of New York's 10
million residents are expected to
come down with the flu.
New York Schools Superin
tendent Willian Jensen termed
the school absentee rate "alarm
ing," with 280,164 of the city's
964,952 students absent and
3,442 teachers missing from
classes.
At Fort Wane, Health Com
missioner Robert Lohman said it
was impossible to tell immedi
ately if that city's epidemic was
an outbreak of Asian flu.
