Vets Claims Mount
Since World War II,
Official Explains
As of June 30th of this year,
there were 43,394 compensation
and pension cases, added to the
rolls after World War II, which
required adjustment in a claims
review now under way, Mr. S.
T. Brannock, Officer in Charge,
Medford VA office, stated today.
Brannock said the figure in
volved 7.8 per cent of the 621,
000 cases reviewed to June 30,
1957.
Adjustments included 5,421
increases in monthly payments
to match a worsening in the de
gree of disability, 19,629 de
creases in monthly payments to
match an improvement in the
degree of disability, and 23,344
terminations of payments.
Of the 23,344 terminations,
16,668 were ended primarily be
cause of improvement in disabil
ity to a level no longer justify
ing monetary awards, and 6,676
were terminated after VA found
"clear and unmistabable error"
in associating the disability with
the period of military service.
Reason Given
With a few exceptions, service
connection has been -confirmed
in the case of the 16,668 veterans
whose payments were stopped
because of improvement in dis
ability and these veterans may
be returned to the compensation
rolls if their service-connected
ailments again become disabling,
"Brannock said.
Brannock added that veterans
have the right to appeal to the
VA Board of Veterans Appeals
if they believe adverse changes
were not justified.
Started in 1954, the review is
designed to cover all cases . of
World War II or peacetime vet
erans under age 55 who are re
ceiving compensation for service
connected disabilities and all
veterans under 55 who are re
ceiving pensions for nonservice
connected disabilities.
Approximately 1,716,000 cases
will be involved by the time the
review is completed, Brannock
said.

Market Value of
Farms Increases
By 8 Per Cenf
Washington (W The market
value of the nation's farms
jumped 8 per cent to a new
record high of $112,400,000,000
in the year ended last July 1,
the Agriculture Department re
ported today.
The value was expected to be
even greater for the late sum
mer and early fall months, the
department added in a farm real
estate report.
Largest Since Mid-1951
The 8 per cent climb was the
largest annual increase since the
year ended in mid-1951. Farm
values increased by 8 per cent
or more in 47 states, with the
sharpest advances averaging
12 per cent reported In the
southeastern states.
Farm land and building values
increased by 3 per cent between
last March and July 1, the re
port noted. This brought the
Julv 1 index of value per acre
to 151 per cent of the 1947-49
average.
Strength Credited
The report said the strength
in farm values was due to:
Generally favorable ;op
prospects as of mid-1957.
Pressures to enlarge exist
ing farms.
Increased demand for poor-
quality land in some areas.
Farmland to 'deposit' in the
soil bank conservation reserve.
The "continued high level"
of non-farm . business activity.
which has added to the demand
for farmland to be used as resi
dential or industrial property.
