Bleeding Peptic Ulcers
There are two ways of bleed
ing irom a stomacn ulcer: one
is to vomit a lot of red blood, and
the other is

tarry material,
which is di:
gested blood.
C o m m o n ly,
the ulcer that
bleeds does
not give pain,
and hence it is
difficult to say
when it has healed. If the ulcer
is in the stomach one can usually
see with x-rays whether it is ac
tive, but when, as usually hap
pens, it is in the duodenum
(bowel just outside the stomach),
it may be impossible to see with
the x-ray if there is a punched
out little crater. Often, all one
sees is the scarring and pucker
ing that is caused by former ul
ceration. When a man bleeds terribly
from an ulcer, he should be in
a hospital under the observation
of an expert physician and an
expert surgeon. Sometimes, if he
bleeds badly enough, he may
have to be operated on. The de
cision whether or not to oper
ate is often a very difficult one
because whatever is done, the
result can be bad.
Some experts believe that if a
man with an ulcer bleeds three
times, he had better be operated
on. Unfortunately, an operation
doesn't always stop the bleeding.
What is curious is that, in many
cases, when the surgeon operates
he can't find an ulcer anywhere.
Perhaps the blood was just ooz
ing out of the mucous membrane
lining the stomach or upper part
of the bowel.
Physicians Get By
In my experience, physicians
with an ulcer rarely get operated
on. Ihey get by, taking food be
tween meals and before they go
to bed at night. The trouble is
that, although the results of an
operation can be good, they can
also be very bad. and this in
spite of the fact that the work
was done by a very able surgeon.
As yet there Is no ideal -and
safe operation for an ulcer of
the duodenum. Persons past mid
dle age, who suddenly, get an
ulcer of the stomach (not duoden
um) had better be operated on
because the large possibility that
the ulcer is cancerous. Ulcers
of the duodenum practically nev
er are cancerous.
After a lifetime of studying
these ulcers, my impression is
that they can come largely from
psychic strain. A few hundred
times I have seen the symptoms

nedy said Saturday.
He said the committee's next
public hearings, beginning Oct.
21, will concern "certain anti
union activities of employees
who had retained Nathan W.
Shefferman . . . and the role
Shefferman and his staff play
ed." Kennedy outlined a tentative
schedule which would keep the
committee busy most of the fall.
It apparently left no time for
any extended return engage
ment of Teamster union president-elect
James R. Hoffa, swept
into office at his union's conven
tion yesterday despite corrup
tion charges fired by the com
mittee and a blunt warning by
the AFL-CIO to drop him or
risk expulsion.
Kennedy said that after two
or three weeks. of hearings on
Shefferman, the committee
would investigate alleged vio
lence by Teamster union offic
ials in Nashville and Chattan
ooga, Tenn. and neighboring
states.
After that, he said, the com
mittee is expected to investigate
the garbage-hauling business in
New York, reported for years
to be ' racket-ridden. Kennedy
said the investigation would in
volve the Teamsters but would
center on "associations" which
conduct the multi-million dol
lar business.

point in the dieting is the taking
