Gas Rales in Area
Raised October 1
About 10 Per Cent
Starting Tuesday, Oct. 1, gas
rates in the Southern Oregon
area went up an average of 10
tier cent, according to officials of
the California-Pacific Utilities
company.
Local officials said the com-
Danv received substantially the
same per cent of increase it had
requested from the Public Util
ities commission April 29. A 9
per cent, increase was granted
for domestic users while com
mercial users will receive a 11
per cent increase.
The boost in rates will give
the company 6.13 per cent re
turn oi its investment which is
1.75 per cent more than last
year's return of 4.38 per cent.
The company said the increase
was necessary to finance approx
imately 6 per cent on an invest
ment, a local official said.
Expansion Planned
The company has earmarked
$133,373 for expansion and im
provement of facilities in the
coming year.
Medford, Ashland, Klamath
Falls, Roseburg and Grants Pass
are served by the California-Pacific
Utilities company. There
are more than 6.000 custnmprs in
this area, which will be affected
by the boost in prices, the com
pany said.
Bottled or tank gas users will
not be affected by the rate raise,
according to Public Utility Com
missioner "Howard Morgan.
Astoria Bridge
Steps Exhausted
Astoria (IP) Rep. Walter Nor-
blad (R-Ore.) told the Astoria
Junior Chamber of Commerce
Wednesday night that he had ex
hausted every possible avenue of
federal aid for the proposed As
toria bridge across the Columbia
river and that . reliance would
have to be placed on the state
highway, programs of Oregon
and Washington.
"The Reconstruction Finance
Corporation might have been in
a position to lend us the neces
sary sums," Norblad said, "but
after its dissolution a few years
ago it was replaced by the Small
Business Administration which
has neither the legal right nor
the funds to lend to such a proj
ect. "While , I shall continue to
scour every federal agency which
might be of some possible assist
ance to us, I don't want to hold
out any false hopes of help from
Washington, D.C., in building
our bridge."
British TV Audiences
Given 'Naked' Truth
London (IP) British tele
vision audiences saw the naked
truth about nudism Wednesday
night.
Interviewer Daniel Farson vis
ited "Spielplataz" playground
nudist colony north of London
for a 15 minute program in
which nudists cavorted about in
the all together.
One view showed pretty Mrs.
Iseult Kelly sitting by a swim
ming pool while other nudists
played tennis, ping pong and vol
leyball in the background. A few
children strolled by with their
mothers.
But any views of complete
torsos were taken from a com
fortable distance which obscured
anatomical details. Closeups con
centrated on Heads and shoul
ders. ,
The Independent Television
Authority said no one called in
to complain but that one man
called in to congratulate Farson
for his objective interviewing.
Marlon Brando Hurt
In Fall During Movie
Hollywood (IP) Actor Marlon
Brando rested at his home today
after suffering a dislocated
shoulder when he fell down a
grade while filming a movie on
location in Angeles National
Forest.
Brando Wednesday requested
that he be permitted to do his
final scene in the movie "The
Young Lions." The scene had
called for Brando's stand-in to
fall down the grade.
As Brando fell, he injured his
right shoulder. His physician
said the actor would have to
wear a cast for at least three
weeks.
