Radio Station to
Observe 35th Year
At Studio Sunday
Radio station KMED will ob
serve its 35th birthday Sunday,
Sept. 29, with a public open
house at its Ross Lane studio
and transmitter site, according
to General Manager Ray John
son. Hours for the open house are
1 to 5 p.m. Refreshments will
be served. Tours of the studio
will be conducted by guides, ac
cording to Johnson.
Station KMED was the first
station on the air in the Rogue
valley, starting its broadcasts in
1922. Studios for the 50 watt
station were on West Main st.
General Manager
The late Bill Virgin was gen
eral manager of the station
which had a total staff of two.
The station, then called KFAY,
would be on the air each day
only as long as advertising, sold
each morning would pay for air
time.
In 1933 the station's name was
changed to KMED and the pow
er boosted to 100 watts. Several
power boosts were made until
1943 when KMED became a 5,
000 watt, non-directional station,
then the largest of this type be
tween Portland and San Fran
cisco. The station became an NBC
outlet in 1937. In 1950 KMED
was sold to the present owners.

secretary of interior for mineral

fund to halp the family, friends
have reported.
Lawrence, owner and manager
of Larry's Line Up Shop on
South Pacific highway between
Medford and Phoenix, suffered
a severe heart attack July 4..
Names of contributors will be
listed and sent to the family in
Denver, Colo. Mrs. Lawrence
and the children, Mary Lou and
Jimmy, are staying with her
mother in Englewood, near Den
ver. Lawrence has been in the Den
ver hispital since about the mid
dle of July. When heart surgery

Hearing
Pre-Trial
Continues

hearing in the conspiracy case
against Thomas E. Maloney, Se
attle and Spokane race track

Court today.
Circuit Judge Martin Haw
kins told Howard Lonergan, Ma
loney's counsel, Thursday that
he would limit the hearing to
the" defense attack on a half
hour tape recording already
produced by the state. He said
he would not permit him to
bring into the hearing an esti
mated 80 other tapes.
Two state policemen, Capt.
Vayne Gurdane and Lt. Claude
Cross, were on the witness stand
Thursday. They were question
ed about various recordings they
had handled and heard.
The defense seeks to suppress
the tapes as evidence.

weeks more and it will be some
time before he will be able to
be back at the shop, friends re
ported. At its meeting Tuesday night
the Lions club took up an of

Change in Portland
Government Sought

petition to change Portland's
government to a council-manager
form.
If approved then the commit
tee will have to secure 27,807
voters' signatures by Feb. 28
before it can be placed on the j
May ballot.
Eugene TV Channel
For Commercial Use

eral Communications Commis
sion Thursday designated TV
channel 9 at Eugene, Ore., for
commercial use, effective Oct.
31.
The channel previously had
been reserved as an educational
outlet.
The commission rejected a
proposal to reassign channel 7
the educational channel at Cor
vallis, Ore., to Eugene-Cor-vallis
for educational use by
both cities. It said a construc
tion permit already has been
issued to the Oregon State Board
of Higher Education for educa
tional station KOAC-TV on the
Corvallis channel.
The commission in another
action, assigned channel, 2 to
Portland, Ore., effective Oct. 31.
This gives Portland its fifth very
high frenquency channel. The
city now has VHF channels 6, 8,
10, and 12 as well as UHF chan
nels 21 and 27.

David Tait, owner of a South
Haven boat sales firm, spotted
a passing Berrien county sheriff's
car towing a type of boat which
only he sells in this area. Tait
wondered where the officer pur
chased the boat until Deputy
Sheriff Edward Sandera came to
his store. The craft was stolen
from Tait's shop and abandoned
near Coloma, 19 miles south of
here.
