Six District conflicts are on
tap this week end for Jackson
county high school football
squads. Two clubs will have
non-counting frays.
Big league fracas of the week
end will have Phoenix at Brook
ings Friday in the Rogue cir
cuit and District 6 A-2. Both
were winners in opening loop
games last week.
In the same league and dist
rict Illinois Valley of Josephine
county vies at Rogue River on
Friday night and Eagle Point
goes to Henley on Saturday. The
Eagles, defending district
champs, make their 1957 bow
into loop contention. IV, Rogue
River and Henley suffered set
backs last week.
B Schools Play
Jackson county's District 5B
teams all have tussles with
Jacksonville playing Bonanza at
Merrill, St. Mary's hosting Mer
rill at Medford and Talent en
tertaining Sacred Heart of Kla
math Falls.
Two of the A-l schools of
this county play non-conference
tilts while Medford is idle. Cra
ter goes to Redmond while Ash
land will Most Yreka, Calif.
The two members of the A-l
Southern Oregon conference
outside the county have con
flicted with Grants Pass going
to Roscburg and Klamath Falls
entertaining Redding, Calif.
On the collegiate front South
ern Oregon will meet the Uni
versity of British Columbia on
Saturday at Vancouver, B.

school junior in Oklahoma City
when a friend told him it could
help earn a college scholarship.
He produced a winner for five
years at Colgate although his
team was undermanned and
played only a couple of home
games each year.
His six-j-'ear contract of Col-1
gate still had three years to run '
when he jumped into the hotbed
of Southwestern football be
cause "I felt the challenge was
too much to pass up."

The Beavers are ahead in rush
ing offense with 326 yards and

average, all gained in the 20-0
win over Southern California

Nub Beamer, the Oregon State
fullback, leads in individual
rushing with 131 yards to 103
for Lou Valli of Stanford and
92 for Jim Shanley of Oregon.
Jack Fanning of Washington
State caught seven passes for
93 yards and three touchdowns
against Nebraska to lead that department.

day in St. Mary's hospital here,
two weeks after suffering a rup
tured spleen during an intra
squad practice session.
The youth, Walter Leuthke,
was on the ground when a team
mate tripped over him during a
scrimmage, coach Joe Oxley
said.
