Have First
Home Game
(spot with 2 col cut & lineups)
Medford's first big home foot
ball game of the season is billed
this evening.
The Black Tornado, aiming to
hnnnre back after a season
starter loss, will be "at home'
to David Douglas high, a young
metropolitan area school rated
as an up and coming contender
for Oregon athletic diadems.
Kirk-off time will be 8:15
p.m. at the senior high stadium
The scuffle is a non-league game
Medford's Tornado this year
seeks to retain its prestige
gained as three time District
6 A-l titlist and state runner-up
in its class in 1956. The objec
tives suffered a bit of a setback
last week in a 7 to 6 loss to
North Salem.
David Douglas, located two
miles east of Portland and in
varsity contention only for the
second year, is a relative un
known outside its own area and
has an athletic reputation to
build. The Scots got off to an
unimpressive start last season.
defeating only Hillsboro. But
with a nucleus of 10 returning
ipttrmen avvear certain to
make a bigger splash this fall
They turned back Washougal
Wash., in their opening struggle
of the season.
Similar Attacks
This evening's encounter
looms as a battle of simlar of-
fenses. Both the Tornado and the
Scots employ the unbalanced
line with T formation and single
wing plays. Coach Fred Spiegel-
berg and his Medford cohorts
naturally have kept their stra
tegy quiet but, from indications
of their North Salem contest,
may stick pretty much to the
ground. David Douglas, reported
ly has a good passing threat and
more than likely will try to put
it to advantage.
It was passing which enabled
NS to clip the Tornado last Fri
day but Medford defense tight
ened against aerials in the sec
ond half could be as unyielding
tonight.
Spiegelberg pronounced his
club physically intact after a
light workout yesterday. He,
himself, however, is suffering
from a cold and sore throat.
Coach Dick Miller's Scot con
tingent was due to arrive here
late this afternoon.

Red Raiders Tussle

Ashland Southern Oregon
college goes against the virtual
unknown Saturday night when
it opens its 1957 gridiron cam
paign on Fuller field here.
The Red Raiders of the Rogue
go against Moffett Air Force
Base at 8 p.m.
These facts are on hand: Mof
fett boasts a roster of grid talent
gathered from all over the
United States. Players from 18
different states are on the roster.
States as far away as South Caro
lina and Florida are represent
ed. The Airmen have some good
weight with a 230-pounder
among the regulars and 230, 238
and 245-pounders on the bench.
But the real quality of the op
posing forces isn't certain.
The enthusiastic Raider squad
this season boasts a number of
new faces and there are indica
tions that, if possible, a good
number of freshman will play.
Two SOC newcomers, Lee Mc
Gill, freshman halfback from
Klamath Falls, and Phil Sword,
sophomore center from Ashland,
may be in the starting eleven.
Colley Injured
Southern Oregon players are
hampered by mostly minor in
juries but will lose the services
this Saturday of regular tackle
Herb Colley who is recuperating
from a badly hurt knee. Rest of
RED RAIDER IN ACTION
Chuck Romine, above, who
was a stellar Medford High
lineman in the late 1940s, is
now a veteran footballer for
Southern Oregon college and,
playing tackle, is a bulwark of
the Red Raider forward wall.
He and the other Raiders bow
into the 1957 season on Satur
day night as hosts to the Mof
fett Air Force Base eleven.
Kick-off time is 8 p.m. at
Fuller field in Ashland.

there were few around today to '.

the greatest pacers of all time.
The big bay colt from Sher- j

removed all doubt in beating a
fine field on both a dry track
and in the mud here Thursday,
to capture the Little Brown Jug,
the world's richest pacing stake.
It was, as driver Johnny Simp
son said in accepting the big
trophy from Gov. C. William
O'Neill, "the hardest day's work
I have ever had."
It had indeed been a rough
afternoon for Simpson and Tor
pid, and the 39,000 spectators.
Torpid, behind at the start in
his first heat, roared on to win
in 2:00 4-5 and then after road
scrapers and graders were called
out to remove the mud caused
by a sudden downpour, came
back to beat his old tormenter,
Adios Express, In the showdown
heat. His time was 2:03 2-5.
