' New York (IP) Let us con
sider today a famous U. S. sen
ator whose footsteps could put
him in the doghouse, a four-billion-dollar
corporation which
built one better doghouse and
stopped, and a little girl on Long
Island whose dog is now better
housed.
It is altogether fitting and pro
per that we do this because next
week Is National Dog Week, and
it was exactly four score and
seven years ago that the senator
delivered his famous courtroom
euology of one dog in particu
lar and dogdom in general and
left the world a proverb:
"A man's best friend is his
dogV'
It was a stormy evening in
September, 1870, when the late
Sen. George Graham Vest, a
short, stumpy man with prematurely-graying
temples, quick
blue eyes and a brilliant speak
ing delivery, stepped before a
jury in the Warrenburg, Mo.,
courthouse and began uttering
the words that have been re
printed millions of times:
"Gentlemen of the jury: the
best friend a man has in the
world may turn against him . . .
a man's dog stands by him in
prosperity and poverty, in health
and sickness ..."
Client Won Case
After about 500 words in that
vein, ending with a word por
trait of the noble dog lying faith
fully on his master's grave, Vest
sat down. The judge , blew his
nose noisily. The moist-eyed
jury took only a few minutes
to award $50 damages to Vest's
client, whose dog,. Old Drum,
had been killed.
Now the citizens of Warrens-
burg are raising funds to build
a monument to Old Drum. If
you ask me, it :s time for the
dogs of the world to do some
thing about erecting a monument
to George Graham Vest
Senator Vest was a citizen of
my home town, Boonville, Mo.,
and around there they like to
recall his quick wit. Once in
arguing a murder trial which
hinged on whether a man could
be recognized by the sound of
his footsteps, he told the jury:
"Gentlemen, every night when
I step onto the wooden walk to
my house, my wife can tell with
out looking who it is. And some
times," he added after a weighty
pause, "she can even tell where
I've been."
Builds Steel Doghouse
The dog's stature has been
growing steadily since Senator
Vest's build-up until today one
collie has the power to move
the vast U. S. Steel Corp., the
outfit known as "Big Steel.'
His name is Brucie. ,He lives
in Elmont, N.Y., with his mis
tress, Florence Fischerman, 12.
Several months ago, Florence
wrote to Clifford F. Hood, Big
Steel's president, asking wheth
er they built stainless steel dog
houses, since Brucie's old wood
en one was termite-ridden. Hood
thought: "Humm." He set an
engineering task force ,to figur
ing whether U. S. Steel should
get into doghouses steel ones
as a product,
They built a stainless steel
pilot model, shiny and wood
lined. They hemmed and hawed

Wage Rise Blamed For Inflation Boost
Washington W The Na
tional Association of Manufac
turers said Saturday rising
wages and higher taxes, not
greedy businessmen, are to
blame for inflation.
"The conclusion is inescapable
that the current inflationary
trend is due to the rising costs
of labor and the continuing
heavy tax burden, not to the
'greed of manufacturers for ex
horbitant profits, as some peo
ple claim," the NAM said in an
especially prepared booklet.
It recommended government
economy to permit taxation
"fair and square," and a return
to "equality" in wage bargain
ing to permit "economically
sound" settlements as the solu
tion to the problem.
The 10-page booklet gave the
association's analysis of "wages,
prices, profits and inflation."
"Profit margins on sales have
suffered, just as the American
consumer has suffered, from the
power of monopolistic unions to
exact "wage gains unrelated to
productivity," it said.
To back that up, it said gov
ernment statistics showed that
hourly wages increased more
than twice as fast as hourly out
put between 1948 and 1956.
