Garlands Back from Trip

rrank Carland recently return
ed home from a five weeks va
cation trip, going the coast high
way, the southern route to the
Middle West, and back the nor
thern route by Bend and Klam
ath Falls.
In San Fernando they visited
Mr. and Mrs. W. D. LeMaster,
sister of Mrs. Carland. At Bur
bank they saw another sister of
Mrs. Carland, Mr. and Mrs. D.
G. Jones. At Denver they vis
ited a brother and family of
Mrs. Carland, and they had a
picnic lunch in Estes park
where the two families had pic
niced 40 years ago. In Nebraska
they visited a brother of Carland
who has been ill, and another
brother whom they had not seen
for 30 years.
In Lusk, Wyo., they visited
another brother and family of
Mrs. Carland, and in Union and
La Grande, Ore., they visited a
sister and brother of Carlands'
and their families, and at Klam
ath Falls, his nephew and family.
Mrs. Grace Workman has
moved to 209 Fourth st. Her
son-in-law and daughter, Mr.
and Mrs. Theodore Hickman, of
Klamath Falls spent Labor Day
with her.

Lydia Betz, left Labor Day after
spending a 10-day furlough at
home. He returned to Fort Leo
nard Wood Air Force base, Mo.
Pvt. Betz recently completed an
eight weeks basic combat train
ing course at Fort Lewis, Wash.
He is a former Phoenix High
school student.
Larry Lawrence had double
surgery on his heart at a Den
ver hospital where he has been
since suffering an attack July 4
last Tuesday.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lumley
and four children of Sharp Park,
Calif., are visiting thjs week at
the Nazarene parsonage with the
Rev. and Mrs. Marvin Lumley
and family.
Seaside Man Killed

euhl, 28, Seaside, was killed Sat
urday morning in a logging aci
dent just south of here.
He was killed when a guy
wire on a loading and yarding
donkey engine broke and wrap
ped the man in cable between
the drums causing the fatal in
juries. Zumeuhl was fastened so se
curely in the cable he had to be
cut away.
He is survived by a wife and
two children in Seaside.
Ten-Year-Old Killed
By Runaway Tractor
Eugene HP) Dennis Molenda,
10-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs.
Fred J. Molenda, Bloomberg rd.,
rural rt., Eugene, died on his
grandfather's farm 22 miles
north of here Friday aftennon of
injuries when a runaway tractor
he had been driving overturned,
pinning him beneath it.
Dennis and his grandfather, J.
W. Nichols, had taken sacks of
trash to the top of a hill where
it was to be dumped. The boy
had been driving the tractor,
hauling a four-wheel trailer load
ed with the sacks.
The grandfather told Lane
county Coroner Fred Buell that
he was unloading the sacks as
the boy jockeyed the tractor
around when the youngster ap
parently hit the cluth pedal in
stead of the brake. The tractor
started down the hill, -the boy
still in the driver's seat,
i It sped down the slope, Nich
ols said, and overturned on a
GOdegree bank, pinning Dennis
by one arm. Nichols said he was
unable to lift the tractor, left
the boy to find help and return
ed with two neighbors who
raised it off the boy.
Buell said the boy died about
the time the tractor was remov
ed. He said the immediate cause
of death was not known, but
that there may have been in
ternal injuries. An autopsy was
to be held.

Hydro Potential High
For Columbia Basin
Reno, Nev. (IP) Dr. William
Pearl, administrator for the Bon
neville Power Administration in
Portland told members of the
, Columbia Interstate Compact
Commission Friday that Colum
bia river hydroelectric develop
ment and potential was the
greatest of any similar area in
the world.
Pearl said there were 19 hy
droelectric projects under con
struction or scheduled for early
construction in the Columbia
River Basin. He said these would
nearly double the already in
stalled capacity of 6,500,000 kil
owatts. There are presently 105 Fed
eral and non-Federal projects in
the basin, which includes a por
tion of Northwestern Nevada,
Pearl said. Nevada is consider
ed an upstream state.
An explanation of the Power
Pool was given by Marshall L.
Blair of the Washington Power
Co. He described the Pool as op
erating on an informal basis un
der sponsorship of the utilities
and operaed by their engineers.
Tho Pool is used to provide pow
er from many sources at loca
tions where demands- are the
greatest at a given time.
The conference concludes to
day with reports of a special
action study committee and a
general discussion.
Teenagers Killed
Enroute From Picnic
Mitchell, Ore. (IP) Two teen
age boys on their way home
from a weiner roast about 10
p.m. Friday night were struck
and fatally injured by a car driv
en by Wyatt Warrick, John Day.

Killed were Jackie Osborne,
16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Delbert
Osborne, Mitchell, and Robert
Brantley, 15, son of the Rev.
Brantley who moved to Mitchell
only recently.
Authorities here said the War
rick car was travelling toward
Mitchell from John Day. As it
came around a sharp curve it
struck the Osborne and Brant
ley boys and narrowly missed
Bobbie Hale and Newt Harvin
who had been on the same pic
nic. Warrick said the boys came
into view too fast for him to
avoid them after he saw them in
the glare of his headlights.
Fisherman Missing

Astoria (IP) William C. Moi
lan, Astoria, has been missing
from a "tuna troller" since
Thursday, the Coast Guard re
ported Saturday.
Moilan was fishing about 25
miles off Destruction island with
his partner.
His partner, whose name was
not divulged, said that he went
below deck to get some food
and when he came back up Moi
lan was not there.
He said the water was ex
tremely rough at the time.
Lumber Men" Invited
To Present Testimony

testify at two Senate hearings
scheduled in Portland Nov. 14
