advice to parents:
1. Keep communication lines between
you and your children wide open. Let
them tell you what they think and
want. Listen with patience and don't
ridicule, however immature their ideas
may seem. Expect change. Act as a
sounding board.
2. Help them in their freshman year
of high school to start a folder of photos,
pamphlets, monographs, and stories
about outstanding persons in fields in
which they are interested. The more a
young person knows about promising
professions, the more easily he can
make a satisfactory decision. Industry,
private organizations, and government
agencies offer extensive aids for the

career-hunting youth. A typical library
in a town of 17,000 recently listed de
tailed briefs on 255 jobs, 50 free pam
phlets from national companies, 15
career books, and 92 industry reports
on employment needs.
3. Encourage them to seek Summer
jobs to gain firsthand knowledge of
the work that intrigues them. It will
help their career ideas to jell, teach
valuable discipline, and show them why
they need further education.
Finally, parents should know that
today they can help educators open
new frontiers for young people seek
ing careers. Job experience which
individual parents may not have access
to can be made available to their chil
dren if they act collectively.
For example, one New Jersey town,
through its PTA, chamber of com
merce, and nearby industry, obtains
prominent speakers who visit the high
schools and give students a live picture
of what various careers are really like.
Field trips to laboratories, department
stores, designers' studios, printing
plants, and produce markets also can
be worked out if parents are willing
to help teachers with the leg-work and
nominal expenses involved.
In Maryland, Johns Hopkins Uni
versity is pioneering a Summer training
program of jobs for high-school stu
dents. Under its Operations Research
Office (ORO), students take temporary
jobs in science research, teamwork
analysis, and laboratory assignments
with nearby industry. Other schools
are working out similar plans.
"Until now," said one of the high
school lads, "I'd been hazy on the work
people do in research and science. I
thought it was all glamour. Now I
know better, but I still want to make
my living in this field!"
No wonder ORO director Ellis John
son says: "Give promising young
people leadership and resources, then
treat them as adults, and they will
respond as adults!"
