San Francisco (W A tiny

than a cigar box, has opened the
way for exploration of the last
great unknown territory of the
world the depths of Davy

This latest development in a
closed-circuit video will soon
give man a closeup look at un

have been as remote and myste

The fascinating possibilities of

Are you a bit bulgy? If so,
you better check your weight on
the charts showing what you
should weigh for one of your
sex, age, heights and type of
figure. After you have reached
the age of 35, each pound of
overweight decreases your life
expectancy by one per cent. So
claim the life insurance com
pany statisticians. Of course,
there are exceptions to this rule.
Theodore Liebler Sr., well
known theatrical producer of
the yesteryear who weighed 300
pounds or more lived to be 90
years of age. Who is the oldest
fat man you know?
Slogie Department
Am ' practically cleaned out of
stogies. All because of my griev
ous error as to the number of
places named Dublin in the
United States. While there are
more Dublins in this country
than I said, there seems to be a
disagreement as to the exact
number. The Encyclopedia Bri
tannica Jr. lists 12. A Brooklyn-
ite, however, claims there are
17. He includes Dublin, Idaho,
which he says has a population
of three. I wonder if I have a
reader there.
. Sidelights
Franz Weichsebraun, who is
103 years of age, is the oldest
man in Austria. His recipe for
a long life is: "Drink milk until
you die but stop having girl
friends at 80" . . . Am informed
that to get "closed TV" pro
grams, sucL as championship

quires no particular technical
knowledge. It is accomplished
by an attachment made for the
purpose. However, my inform
ant does not say where this
gadget can be obtained.
Songwriiing
There is not much of a mar
ket for poetry these days.
Those having . poetic talent
should try writing lyrics for
popular songs. In this connec
tion it is interesting to note that
Dorothy Fields was a high
school teacher and a writer of
magazine poetry when she
witched to popular song writ
ing. In partnership with Jimmy
McHugh she wrote such hits as
"I Can't Give You Anything
But Love Baby," "On The
Sunny Side of the Street,"
"I'm In The Mood For Love"
and "Lovely To "Look At."
Marrying Man
So you think Tommy Man
ville, who has been married 10
times, is a much married man?
Ben Ahmed of Singapore, who
is 73 years old has been married
69 times. He is the father of 60
children. He is about to be mar
ried for the 70th time.
Horses and Women
Has your wife what is re
ferred to in the women's wear
industry as a "difficult figure"?
If so, she may be interested in
knowing that a recent survey
has revealed that only 10 per
cent of British women can
wear "ready to wear" clothing
without alterations.
Please Note
Did your mother come from
Ireland? How about your fa
ther? My grandgather came
from there. The exodus from
Erin's Isle has been going on
for some time. The population
of Ireland is now less than half
what it was 116 years ago. In
1841, it was 6,529,000. Today
it is 2,894.822.

Standing on the head stimu

several successful fellows who
spent a brief period standing oh
their heads when seeking an
idea. Sam Wood, the great film
director, was one of them. Mi

brief periods. However, Mr.
Grace does not do it to stimu
late thought. He says it is good
for sinus trouble.

reversed, sir. It should be: Why
couldn't the Giants keep New
York? That is, why couldn't
they keep the local fans inter

The answer is simple. The New
Yorkers grew tired of the
phoney lively ball, the cheap
home runs into a shortened
right field stand, the fake argu
ments with the umpire, etc. It
wouldn't surprise me if the
Giants experienced the same box

Junior Colleges
Now Permitted
A bill passed by the 1957
state legislature opened the way
for community junior colleges
in Oregon. It allows a school
district to establish a junior col
lege or several school districts
to form a college district.
To qualify, a district must
have an estimated true cash
value of $20 million, enrollment
ii grades nine through . 12 of at
least 500, and adequate library
and plant facilities. The state
board of education must give ap
proval. Courses of study may extend
up to two years beyond the
twelfth grade.
Reimbursement from a special
account set up under state basic
school support will not exceed
25 per cent of the operating costs
of a junior college. Ninety-thou- j
sand dollars were appropriated j
out of the fund for the 1957-59
biennium for community col
leges. 'Something Different'

school music supervisor.
Martin promised a "treat" in
marching maneuvers performed
by the marching band at home
football games. The group con
tains 50 pieces.
The 30-member concert band
will follow the new trend with
a "pops" concert. An operetta is
scheduled for November by the
high school chorus. New robes
are being made for the group by
the Parent-Teacher Student as
sociation. Grade school music is under

Sea Depths
TV "eye" sees in the depths is
transmitted to a viewing screen
aboard a salvage ship to allow
experts to assay the damage.
The Navy also uses the equip
ment to inspect such things as
submarine nets and is experi
menting with the TV camera as
an underwater mine detector.
In oil exploration, Ivans said,
the TV camera provides the
company's geologists first-hand
view of the rock formations and
canyons of the ocean bottom to
make decisions where to drill.
"This job previously was
done by divers," he said, "but
this has been inefficient because
the divers aren't geologists and
the oil company scientists have
had to rely on second-hand in
formation from a layman."
Special Lights
The powerful floodlights used
with the equipment enable the
cameras to "see" for several
hundred feet even in the pitch
blackness encountered at great
depths, Ivans said. Because the
television lenses can see light
that is invisible to the human
eye, the equipment uses special
ultra-violet lights which pene
trate the water much further
than ordinary white light.
Ivans said he saw virtually no
limit to the depth at which the
cameras can be made to oper
ate. He predicted that some day
they will be used to explore
such spots as the 34,400-foot
Mindanao Deep of the Philip
pines, a place that scientists
have only been able to guess
about.
"The possibilities of undersea
television are staggering," Ivans
said. "It can be used by oceanog
raphers to make a detail map of
the ocean's bottom which pre
viously has been charted only
by blind soundings."
It has possibilities for com
mercial fishermen to sight
schools of fish. And for the ro
mantic, the cameras might find
sunken treasure ships.
Some Experts Think T
Market May Do Better
After Labor Holiday
By ELMER C. WALZER
United Press Financial Editor
New York (IP) Some Wall
Street experts after deep study
on their respective park benches
have concluded the market just
might do a lot better after Labor
Day.
They point out the selling
nnce July 12 has done a lot
toward correcting an overin
flated market at a time when in
flation was losing its sting gen
erally. In their study of the market's
prospects for the future the mar
ket men turned some of their
deep thinking on the causes of
the sharp decline in prices of
equities.
No Big Boom
The main reason brought out
was that inflation talk didn't set
off a big boom as many had an
ticipated. There had been so
much inflation talk that the
stock market observers had be
gun to think this was the type" of
inflation that would send people
scurrying away from dollars into
goods at any price.
It just didn't work that way.
People resisted high prices and
the net result was a profit
squeeze instead of a Drofit boom.
It wasn't that Wall Street
wanted inflation or simply that
Wall Street needs it to have a
real bull market.
The idea had been that with
inflation here, the people just
could not put all their money
into potatoes, er motor boats, or
other goods, so they'd buy stocks
and the prices would go up
and up.
When it didn't work out as ex
pected the market fell of its own
weight. Demand dried' up and
small amounts of selling brought
wide declines.
Now that there has been a
correction without many rallies,

the market men anticipate an
adjustment to a new situation
a high rate of business without
a boom.
They look for strength in
many sections of the list on the
basis of merit of the particular
issue rather than an overall rise.
These experts point out that
there still is a lot of money seek
ing investment. Some of this,
they feel, will go into bonds
which provide better yields thttn
many stocks. But they also look
for a new demand to develop for
a long list of stocks, a list suf
ficiently long to give the market
an appearance of strength.
Once the economy adjusts sim
ilarly, the demand for money
lighten moderately with a pos
sibility of a dip in money rates,
it is held.
Translator Operates
For TV Signal Relay
The Southern Oregon Broad
casting company and the Ore
gon - California Television, Inc.
put into operation Thursday a
TV translator to relay signals
from KBES-TV to the Illinois
valley. j
The unit is used to pick up
signals from KBES-TV's main
transmitter and change them
into ultra-high frequency signals
on channel 70 before forwarding
them to the valley. The pickup
translator is located on Eight
Dollar mountain.
A rhombic antenna is beng
used to get the ghost-free pic
tures, according to Ed Malone,
engineering vice president of
KBES-TV. Tests proved that pic
tures were received at the Ore

in the Illinois valley. Work is
