    SIX MZDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE
Church Head Tells
Christian Solution
To Racial Question
Br LOUIS CASSELS
United Press Correspondent
Washington WU- The head
cf the South's largest religious
denomination said today church
members have three "clear du
ties" to perform in seeking a
Christian solution of Southern
racial problems.
The duties were listed by Rep.
Brooks Hays (D-Ark.). recently-
elected president of the 8,300
000 - member Southern Baptist
convention, in an interview in
his capitol hill office. He des
cribed them as "moral impera
tives" which confront every sin
cere Christian layman, regard
less of his personal views on
segregation.
"Our first duty," said the soft-
inoken, 59 -year -old Arkansas
'congressman, "is to keep free
and unfettered the prophetic
voice of the church."
Hays said attempts to si
lence" a minister who prods the
sore spots of a congregation's
conscience are the supreme
heresy."
Minister Needs Defended
"Every layman who really be
lieves his Christian profession
must help to defend his minister
from any political, social or eco
nomic pressures that would keep
him from speaking out his true
convictions."
The second duty, he said, is
to throw all of the influence of
religion and that influence is
considerable in most Soutnern
communities on the side of a
non-violent adjustment" of ra
cial tensions.
"The whole power of the
church must strike hard at any
threat, intimidation or physical
violence. The Christian con
science cannot condone beatings,
bombings and the brutalities of
night-riding thugs."
Finally, church members
rnust display "imagination and
Christian courage" in correcting
"specific - situations where the
actual practice of the community
has produced injustice."
In the present inflamed state
of Southern feelings. Hays feels,
a firm determination to work
for "simple justice" may yield
more real orosress In race rela
tions than an appeal to the high
er motive of brotherly love.'
Whatever all-out Northern in
tecrationists may think of this
threefold program. Hays knows
that it is a lot to ask of Baptists
under the conditions now pre-
vailine in the deep South.
"It will take courage and con
viction to discharge these three
duties," he said.
