Experts Say Potent
Chemical Revives
Diseased Plants
Stanford, Calif. -MID Scien
tists reported Thursday on ex-!
penments with a potent new
chemical that revives diseased
plants and causes potatoes to
sprout one or two weeks early.
This chemical Is gibberellic j
acid, made from a fungus called ,
gibberella fujikuroi. In amounts
of one millionth of an ounce in !
an ounce of water, it makes
some plants grow three times
taller than untreated ones in
just a lew weens.
itesearcners at tne university
of C a 1 i f o r n i a's agricultural
school at Davis said that seed
potatoes given a five - minute
bath in a gibberellin solution j
"can shake off their usual rest i
period and begin to sprout one
or two weeks early. . . ,
Chemical Potent
But so potent is the chemical,
said researchers Lawrence Rap
paport, Herman Timm and La
verne Lippett, that direct treat
ment of the tubers may not be
necessary.
They told the American Insti
tute of Biological Sciences that
giberellin sprays applied to
plant foliage as much as seven
weeks before harvest can break
the dormancy for many of the
potatoes grown on the treated
plants.
This discovery may prove .to
be important in California and
other potato growing states. Po
tato production is a year-round
operation in California and new
ly - dug immature potatoes are
used as seed for the next crop.
However, such seed, because it
is usually dormant after digging,
often produces - erratic stands
and decreased crop yields. .
Applied io Corn
Earlier this week, Dr. Karl !
Maramorasch of the Rockefeller
Institute in New York reported
he applied gibberellic acid to
corn plants, asters and clover
severely stunted by virus dis
eases. "When gibberellic acid was
sprayed at 100 parts per million
on the leaves of diseased plants,"
he said, "and this treatment vas
repeated twice at weekly inter
vals, a striking response was ob
tained." Maramorosch said the stems
and leafstalks became strong and
erect, elongating themselves at
least twice as much.
"Stunting could thus be over
come to a considerable degree,
although the plants retained
other signs of virus infection."
he said.

New Development
In Welding Told
Chicago KB A new develop
ment in arc welding has been
announced by National Cylinder
Gas company.
The new process is called Dual
Shield, and the manufacturers
expect it to have a "significant
impact" on industries concerned
with welding steel.
Dual Shield is three to 12
times faster than manual "stick
electrode" welding and about
33 per cent faster than semi
automatic methods, the makers
said.
Fourteen and one-half pound?
of weld metal an hour can be
deposited with this new instru
ment, compared with three and
one-half per hour by averfg-2
welders.
The depth of penetration is
greater than other processes, the
manufacturers added, and there
fore gives stronger welds.
The Dual Shield arc is at least
1,000 degrees hotter than the
average 9,000-degree welding arc
of other welding equipment.
The new welder, the manu
facturers reported deposits more
than 99 per cent of its metal
weld in the job, compared with
75 to 80 per cent deposited in
manual welding.
Dual Shield was described as
the first "economical and effect
ive combination" of flux-cored
electrode and shielding gas for
mild steel welding, and the first
successful flux core electrode
for welding steel.
All the continents could be
placed in the Pacific Ocean and
there would still be room for
another the size of Asia.
