the school of forestry at Oregon
State college and chairman of
the Keep Oregon Green associa
tion, has asked the help of all
Jackson county residents to keep
fire out of the woods in the cur
rent fire season.
District Warden Curtis Nesh

man - caused this year. Thirty
man-caused fires were reported
during a four-week period end
ing Aug. 21.
Until fall rains arrive, the
danger of fires is ever present
and affects everyone, added Mc

As I said in a recent column,
achondroplastic dwarfs are born
with an abnormality ofgrowth
in the ends of their long bone3.
We physicians know too little
about the chemistry of the pro
cess o at

There are two main types of
dwarfs: first are the' perfectly
formed little people. ve read
that both the,rnen and the wom
en in this group can have normal-
sized children. Second are
the achondroplastic dwarfs who
can easily be recognized by
their rather large head, normal
trunk, and short upper arms
and short legs. These dwarfs can
have normal children, but there
is a form of the disease in which
their children are achondro
plastic. o
So far as I know, in mo
cases the child is normal
enough. He is intelligent and
good-natured. In a number of
the old paintings of Spanish
royalty, one finds alongside a
little prince the dwarf who ap
parently was his favorite com
panion. I have a letter from Mr. Al
len D. Reed, Box CC, Delake,
Cireenn. whn savit hp is much
interested in the problems , of
these children because he and
his wife, some years ago, adopt
ed an achondroplastic boy. He
says Stevie is the greatest
favorite among all the children
in his school and among the
business men up and down Main
Street. One such dwarf remark
ed that at school his only diffi
culties were that he was made
the mascot of everything, and
his fellow students were so
over-protective of him that they
made life too easy for him. In
Stevie's case psychologic tests
have shown a curious mixture
of some decided abilities and
sorge very low responses.
Mr. Reed is so interested in
learning more about these
achondroplastics that I think
it would be good if all parents
who hav such a child would
get intouch with him and send
him what information they have
cn the problem. Some day, if
Mr. Reed gets enough, informa1
tion, he may be able to write
a helpful book cn the subject.
Judd Greenman Dies
In Portland Tuesday
Portland OP) Funeral
sevices will be held here Friday
for Judd Greenman, former gen
eral manager of Long-Bell Lum
ber company's Vernonia divis
ion. He died Tuesday at the age
of 71.
Greenman was president of I
the Oregon-American Lumber
Corporation when controlling
interest was purchased by Long
Bell in 1953. The family had
lived in Portland since Green
man's retirement in 1?55.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Lillian Greenman; a daugh
ter, Mrs. Phoebe Burrow,
Boston; a son, Hale Greenman,
Medford; a sister, Mrs. Louise
Goodwin, Dana Point, Calif.,
and six grandchildren.
