at Medford's Rogue Valley
Country club.
Norquist accomplished the
feat on the 175-yard No. 17 hole
in his 2-up win over Harry Mil
lette, one of the leading en
trants of the home course. His
first ace was a perfect shot, true
all the way. It was one of the
few holes-in-one in the annals
of SO tourney play and the first,
at least in many years, in the
championship flight.
The ace was the highlight
among opening round matches
which saw two medalists
tumbled and the third survive
with the help of experience and
Lady Luck. Favorites for the
most part came through.

Clayton Lewis, Medford, who
admitted playing his heart out in
a come-from-behind victory, was
2 up spiller of Dr. Robert Budk,
Medford, whose 71 in qualifying
had given him No. 1 seeded po

Norquist's ace enabled him to
take a 1 up lead on Millet?. On
No. 18 with MUlette's ball on
hard pa and his swing-blocked
by a leaf, the Rogue Valley man
moved the obstruction causing
the ball to roll. Gez Millette
called the stroke penalty on
himself and conceded the hole
and the match. He would have
had to win the hole to square
the match and. Send it to extra
holes.

nine. Norquist was three up after
five holes but Millette was even
after nine greens. Then Nor
quist pushed ahead 2 up. Mil
lette evened the tilt by 16, help
ing himself by downing a 40
foot putt.
Won With Even Par -
Lewis won his match with an
even par game. He was even
with Buck after the second hole
but lagged after that until win
ning the 12th 'and 13th to tie
the action and the 17th and 18th
to win. Buck had an eagle .three
on the first hole and, although
taking a seven on No. 2, was
one-ider par at the turn.
Provost had four birds in his
match but double bogied on No.
10 when he overshot the green.
He is bidding for the crown he
won in 1954. Atkinson, after his
fourth toga fiere, had three birds
on the front stretch.

Harrington, Phoenix, Ariz., with
a one-under par game, come
