at the Jackson county fair Fri
day night.
The total weight of sheep was
8.845 pounds, and sales totaled
$3,535.05. The average price per
pound for sheep was 40 cents,
and the average weight was 98
pounds.
A total of 19,680 pounds of
wine was sold at a total pur
chasing price of $6,690.55. The
average weight for swine was
189 pounds with an average price
of 43 cents per pound.
Organization members receiv
ed $27,597.54 for 88,125 pounds
of beef cattle sold during the
auction. The average price was
31J cents per pound, and the
average weight was 927 pounds
per animal.

through unfounded promises has
drawn positive Congressional ac
tion from Rep. Charles O. Porter
(D.-Ore.).
The Fourth District Congress
man has introduced legislation
which would make it illegal to
send through the mails enve
lopes or wrappers containing
writing "reasonably calculated"
to induce the addressee to ex
amine the contents inside.
Persons knowingly mailing
such material or aiding in their
circulation "shall be fined not
more than $1,000 or imprisoned
not more than one year, or
both."
The Congressman checked to
see if the law prohibited such
mailings when Dale Pederson, a
Eugene attorney, complained in
anger that he had received a let-

Mary Matthew by searching the

of confession was found Thurs

murder weapon, a stick, had
been left near the yard where
the girl was attacked.
She died of head injuries suf
fered in the assault last week.
The writer of the confession
note said he had struck the
blows which resulted in the
Matthew girl's death, and seri
ous injury to a companion,
Barbara Heldt, 10. The girls had
been sleeping outside in the
yard of the Heldt home.
