MY NEWSPAPER IS.
Here is a sweet singer who
sounds like a robin with a
cultivated voice. He is a
beautifully dressed member
of the finch family. When you
color him in his true colors
you will see how pretty he is.
Though his wife and the little
ones look more subdued, the
young male birds are soon
decked out in father's fine
colors. When his wife is on
her five greenish-blue eggs,
he watches over her very lov
ingly. His scientific name is
Hedymeles Ludovicianus.
Once a year he flies from
the Far North way down the
East Coast. He is retiring in
his habits and stays near his
nest in the woods. His nest
is so casual that sometimes
the eggs spill out! But he
tries to keep the nest very
clean. With his strong beak
he eats lots of potato bugs
and other pests that plague
farmers. They don't even
mind his fondness for peas
because when he has emptied
the pods he tidies them up
into little piles.
What a gentlemanly bird
he is! Who is he?
