Refractories and Abrasives Corp.
The improved stopper is re
ported to be able to regulate
the flow of molten steel as
many as 50 times during a
single heat without giving indi
cations of cracking from heat
shock or "spalling." This is im
portant because stopper failure
could result in an uncontrolled
flood of, molten metal to cause
worker casualties. It also could
mean serious steel loss as
much as 250 tons in some cases.
The new stopper is made from
flakf graphite, fused silica and
fire refractory clay. For operat
ing temperatures above the
normal 2,900 F., aluminum ox
ide is added to the mixture.
It is said to be so durable
that it can be removed from a
white hot furnace and placed
on a cold floor without crack
