'Gluability' Depends
On Electrical Changes
Ann Arbor, Mich. IB Ever
wonder what makes glue stick?
So have scientists, and here's
the answer accviing to Alan
A. Marra, associate professor of
wood technology at the Univer
sity of Michigan. But you have
to be a bit of a scientist to
understand the answer:
"Gluability doesn't depend on
the roughness of the surface, as
la popularly supposed. It de
pends on the same forces which
hold all materials together.
"These forces basically are the
result of unequal distribution
of electrical changes in mole
cules and they operate In the
same way as the attractive
forces in a common bar magnet.
But an adhesive deploys these
force differently and makes
some available for holding onto
something besides itself.
"This is accomplished by let
ting the adhesive pass through
a fluid stage while it's in con
tact with the surface to which
it must adhere. Every surface
has left-over forces which aren't
being used to hold anything
4ince there is no material on one
side, and these provide points
of ancSorage for the adhesive
forces."
So Marra suggests that if glue
fails, it may have hardened be
fore it could contact all available
surfaces or the forces which
would hold it are covered with
dirt of some contamination.
Proprietor of Diner
Convinced It's Jinxed
Rochester, N. Y. HP) George
Vesel bent over to tie a shoe
lace in the living quarters of the
diner he operates and the
next thing he knew he had a
box car for csmpany.
"Looking up to see fixtures
come crashing down, Vesel said
he "thought it was , n earth
quake." He smashed a window,
cutting his wrist, and fled in
fright. Then he turned to see
what had happened.
A diesel locomotive left un
attended in nearby yards with
its engine running had started
up, picking up a meat-loaded
box-car on the rails a short dis
tance ahead and shunted it on
through a bumper stop into the
rear wall of Vesel's diner.
The 58-year-old proprietor,
who had just spent $2,000 on
the diner to repair damage from
a fire, had reason to believe the
eatery was jinxed.

Material Outpuf
To Gain 100 Per Cent
Los Angeles HPl Dr. George
H. Hildebrand, nationally
known labor economist, believes
that automation, atomic and so
lar power as well as other tech
nological advances will increase
the nation's material output by
as much as 100 per cent by
1967.
With this increase will come
great changes in industrial rela
tions. Hildebrand added.
"We are," he said, "on the
threshold of a new era of un
precedented industrial produc
tivity which will have an enor
mous impact on the traditional
relations between management
and labor."
Good industrial relations, as
the doctor defined them, mean
nothir g more complicated than
agreement on certain estab
lished economic concepts, a
knowledge of human relations
techniques and respect for the
principle of collective ' bargaining.

IT'S A LONG WAY DOWN Maj. David G. Simons, U. S.
Air Force biologist who spent more than a day sailing
some 19 miles above the earth in a balloon, made this
photo at an extreme but undetermined altitude during
the flight which began at Crosby, Minn., and ended near
Frederick, S. D. Scattered cumulus clouds can be seen
floating over the earth's surface. At lower right is a
device for measuring temperature outside the gondola in
which the major rode.
