By FRED DOWN
United Press Sports Writer
Add Lew Burdette to the rea
sons the Milwaukee Braves are
steadily driving those nails into
the coffins o their National
league rivals.
It was just about this time a
year ago that the controversial
right-hander went into a tail
spin that contributed to the
Braves' failure to win the flag.
Lew finished the 1956 season
with a 19-10 record but he won
only three games after Aug. 22
as the Braves faltered in the
stretch.
It appears that there'll be no
late slump this year, however,
for Burdette, who whipped the
Brooklyn Dodgers, 6-1, Thurs
day night to keep the Braves'
6Vi-game lead Intact. The St

Sacramento Emerges,
Trip Twinks Again
By JIM HEALY
United Press Sports Writer
With all the attention in the
Pacific Coast league focused on
the top three teams' who should
emerge from their cocoon of
losses but the seventh place
Sacramento Solons.
The Solons, who have made
less than a brilliant showing so
far this season, bristled with
. confidence and snappy pitching
Thursday night as they downed
Hollywood for the fourth
straight time, 4-2.
Joe Stanka won the contest,
fanning 11 Star batters in the
process and walking only three.
The Solons stayed on top all the
way scoring two in the first
frame and another pair in the
third. George Witt, one of the
best hurlers in the Coast
League, started, was yanked in
the third and lost for a 15-5
record. Jim Westlake hit the
' only homer, a long blast over
. right field fence in the third
with none on.

second time, 5-3, Los Angeles
smashed Portland, 5-1, in 10 in
lngs, while Vancouver took its

Fadres, 4-2.
Steve Bilko came through
with his 47th homer of the year
in the 10th Thursday night to
give the Angels their splashing
win. It was tied 1-1 up to then,

had put on a tough defensive
fight. Both early runs came the
hard way Portland on a walk
and a sacrifice and Los Angeles
on two singles.
Ralph Mauriello won the con
test while Don Kaiser, who was
yanked in the 10th, was charged

Braves
Nails
five decisions and his 12th tri
umph of the year.
Aaron sent the Braves off
winging against Sal Maglie in
the first inning when he smash
ed a three-run homer. No. 35 of
the year, and Schoendienst, who
had three hits in all, bashed his
14th homer in the fifth. The
Braves now have beaten the
Dodgers 10 times in 17 meet
ings and six different pitchers
have viotories over the defend
ing champions.
Joe Cunningham's two
doubles, a homer by Ken Boyer
and a triple by Al Dark sparked
an early Cardinal attack that
routed 16-game winner Jack
Sanford. Billy Muffet gained
credit for his second win when
he shut out the Phillies for the
last four innings after they
knocked out Larry Jackson. Stan
Musial went 0-for-3 for the Car
dinals and left the game in the
fifth with an ailing left shoulder.
Bob Friend scattered nine.hits
as the Pirates extended the Bed
legs' losing skein to the longest
of the NL season. Gene Freese
and Frank Thomas had' three
hits each for the Pirates and
Dick Groat had a triple.
Mays Hits 28th Homer
Willie Mays boosted his aver
age to .332 with his 28th homer
and two doubles to lead a 10-hit
Giant attack that handed strike
out whiz Dick Drott his lCffh
loss. Bay Crone won his sixth
game for the Giants although he
needed help from Jim Constable
and Marv Grissom.
Harry Simpson's grand slam
homer was the big blow as the
Yankees whipped the Athletics
for the 17th time in 20 meetings.
Jerry Lumpe also had three hits
to help Johnny Kucks win his
eighth game. Wally Burnette
suffered his ninth defeat com
pared to six victories.
Ted Williams snapped out of
his two-day slump to go 2-for-4
and raise his average to .386 in
the Red Sox' rout of the Indians.
Mike Fornield carried a shutout
into the ninth to win his eighth
game while Early Wynn suffer
ed his 15th defeat for the In
dians. Williams now leads Yan
kee star Mickey Mantle by nine
points in the AL batting race.
Frank Lary pitched his sec
ond straight four-hitter and Har
vey Kuenn, Ray Boone and Al
Kaline had two hits each for the
Tigers.

Grid Picture
Brightening
By STEVE SNIDER
New York Wi The football
picture at Notre Dame is bright
ening after its most disastrous
season in history. .
Sure, and the 1997 roster
reads like old times with a gen
erous sprinkling of old sod names
like Dolan a-mixing freely with
such z-y-x jawbreakers as Pietr
zak, Ciecielski and Debetaz.
Put them all together under
the "Irish" banner and Terry
Brennan's newest edition ean be
headed nowhere but up or
else. Personally popular though
he is, Terry can't survive anoth
er campaign like 56.
More than a few hints popped
last season that all was not well
in the inner Irish council as
Notre Dame absorbed its severe
lacings including 40-0 by Okla
homa and 48-8 by Iowa.
Better in '57
When the tumult faded, Terry
vowed, "we'll be better in '57
and better yet in '58," then add
ed cryptically, "by then I'll have
some of my own boys on the
squad not someone else's."
Brennan, now in his fourth
year as head coach, apparently
felt he'd be happier witl? candi
dates he screened personally
rather than leftovers from the
preceding jegime of Frank Lea
hy. So, among the lads with a
distinct Irish flavor are centers
Kevin Burke and Ed Sullivan,
tackles Patrick Dolan and John
McGinley, quarterback Mike Du
gan, halfbacks Patrick Healy,
John Quinn and Dick Lynch and
fullback Doug McGinn.
Part of Brennan's failures
last season stemmed from a wave
of 33 major injuries that de
pleted his squad.
Plagued by Injuries
"Even the substitutes for in
jured players got hurt," said
Terry.
With Jl returning lettermen,
the Irish are in fair shape for
the start up the comeback trail.
junior quarterrjacK sor Wil
liams is the chief hope to steer
the Irish back on the beam
through the usual rugged sched
ule starting with Purdue, then
Indiana, Army, Pittsburgh,
Navy, Michigan State, Oklaho
ma, Iowa, Southern California
and Southern Methodist.
Brennan fears he hasn't
enough depth to cope With that
array but it's Notre Dame's poli
cy to toughen the team, not
soften the schedule. So from
here on it's up to Terry.
