Bad Check Plague Bothers Merchants
A flurry of "bad checks" is
plaguing Medford merchants an8
keeping the three-man detective
section of the city police depart
ment busy this week.
Eight reports of checks re
turned to merchants and marked
"unable to locate" or "account
closed" were made yesterday.
Five reports came jn earlier
this week.
Lt. Lyle C. Perkins of the po
chants to be especially careful
this time of year. A large num
ber of transients are passing
through the city or working
temporarily in the fruit harvest.
Checks are often forged with the
names of co-workers or orch
ards, Perkins said.

It has been suspected excess
weight carried has been the
cause of some recent passenger
airline disasters. How about re
viving the custom of weighing
the passengers? A number of
200-pound travelers among those
on a 60 -passenger plane can
make quite a difference in the
total weight.
Get It Right
Having spent my boyhood in
Brooklyn "The City of Churches"
and also been a star Sunday
school pupil, I have long known
that in the Bible (Luke 12-19)
can be found the following:
"Take thine ease, eat, drink and
be merry." Also that in the Bible
Isaiah (22-13) is the following,
"Let us eat and drink; for to-
morrow we shall die." However,"
the quotation from Luke says
nothing about dying and that
from Isaiah says nothing about
being merry. Therefore my claim
that the quotation, "Eat, drink
and be merry for tomorrow we
die" is not in the Bible is cor
rect. To say that the two can be
combined and referred' to as a
"Biblical quotation" is an ab
surd assumption.
Three Wheelers
Have you seen any three
wheeler motor cars on the high
ways lately? Neither have I.
However, this type of car is
very popular in England. It can
go 85 miles on a gallon of gaso
line, do 50 miles per hour and
carry four passengers. It is
priced at the equivalent of $820.
Birthdays
The British Queen Mother
was born on Aug. 4, Princess
Margaret was born on Aug. 21
and Princess Anne on Aug. 15.
That puts them all under the
sign of Leo. It is said by the
stargazers that Leo women have
a constant desire for romantic
happiness and are miserable
and unhappy when out of love.
Princess Margaret, who is 27,
seems to be "out of love" at this
writing. Should she fall in love,
she now can, being over 25, mar
ry without thejQueen's permis
sion. However, according to the
British "Marriage Act" passed
in 1772, the British Parliament
could prevent a marriage by
Princess Margaret of which they
did not approve.
Asking
Queries from clients: Q. Who
is the oldest living former
world's boxing champion? A.
Seventy - three year old Abe At
tell who won the featherweight
title from "Brooklyn Tommy"
Sullivan in 1908. Q. How many
layers of different liqueurs are
there in that drink known as a
"Pousse Cafe"? A. Usually six;
grenadine, creme de cacao, mar
aschino, creme de rhenthe, creme
Yvette and brandy. This drink
is rarely ordered nowadays. It
was a great favorite of . the
ladies when your grandma was
a whistle girl. Also very few
present day bartenders are suf
ficiently skilful to concoct a
pousse cafe. How about the bar
steward at your neighborhood
pub?
Over There
Hundreds of nudists assemble
at the Tie du Levant, France,
every summer. A recent visitor
to this island, which is 12 miles
out - from Marseilles, said he
didn't view even one female
nudist with a decent figure. His
disappointment was great. That's
generally true of nudist camps
both here and abroad. The male
nudists usually out-number the
females by five to one and shape
ly feminine nudists is a distinct
rarity. However, some nudist
camp owners hire shapely
models to pose as members over
the weekends. These are the
feminine nudists usually seen in
the publicity pictures.
The 1956 quota made it pos
sible for 17,000 Irish immigrants
to enter the United States. How
ever, only 6,000 natives of Ire
land took advantage of the op
portunity. The U.S.A. seems to
be losing its. popularity with the
Irish immigrants. Now most of
them go to Canada.. The wages
there are said to be higher than
in this country and the cost of
living lower.
Passing Br
Alonzo Stagg. Grand Old Man
of the World of Sport. Just
celebrated his' 95th birthday
which gives the claim that men
born in the summer don't live
long a terrific set back. Stagg
was chosen for an end position
on Watler Camp's first All
American Eleven in 1889. He
was also a great baseball pitcher.
When Yale played the Boston
Nationals in an exhibition game
in . 1888, Stagg . fanned Mike
"King" Kelly, the "Babe" Ruth
of that period. Alonzo immedi
ately received numerous offers
to turn nrofessional but turned
' them all down. -
