Two Medford boys, 8 and 12
vears of age. were arrested by
"citv police after being caught
shoplifting at Dunhams Inc.,
1951 North Pacific highway, yes
terday. Pnlir-P said Robert Eberly
Walker, a Dunhams employee,
reported the boys about 4:45
p.m. ,
Two magnets, two levels, two
screw driver sets and two candy
bars were taken by the youths,
police said. Both admitted the
thefts and told police they
"didn't know why-' they stole
the articles.
The boys were released to
.their parents.

here Thursday that the Portland
district Army engineers have
proposed an allocation of $227,
000 "for early construction" of
a navigation project on the Col
umbia river.
Sen. Jackson said the pro
posed project would extend
from Chinook. Wash., to the
head of Sand island and would
consist of improvement to a
small boat basin by construction
of a breakwater and by dredg
ing the entrance channel and
come from a lump sum appro
priation by Congress for small
authorized projects.

the guest of the American Socie
ty for the Study of Sterility, a
group of de
voted physi
c i a n s who,
each year,

or the wife, but in a consider
able percentage of cases, their
treatment enables the wife to
conceive.
My little contribution to the
meeting was to encourage the
doctors to go on with their ef
forts to give many women the
child they want with the help of
artificial 'insemination from a
donor, whose identity is un
known to the couple. I feel
strongly that since ample experi
ence has now shown that this
method can be satisfactory to
both husband and wife, no one
should rise up to say they can
not have a child in this way.
The meddler may not like the
idea, or he may not approve of
the practice, or he may doubt if
his church would approve of it,
but still, I think he would do
well to mind his own business.

For Elk-Trailers
Elk-Trail school . registration
will be held Sept. 3, Robert G.
Work, elementary school princi
pal, announced Thursday.
No lunches will be needed, he
added, since school will be dis
missed at noon the first day.
School busses will run regu
lar morning schedules Sept. 3.
The cafeteria will operate Sept.
4 and children will have a full
day of school that day.
"All children entering the first
grade for the first time this year
must have their birth and health
certificates showing they will be
six years old on or before Nov.
15, 1957," Work said.
New teachers this year will be:
Lola Work, second grade; Ruth
Sawyer, third grade and girls'
physical education; Mrs. Albert
Johnson, fourth grade (half day);
Gary -Monikl, music teacher
(half day).
Teachers returning are: Mrs.
Rowena Wild, first grade; Barry
Campbell, fourth, seventh and
eighth grades and boys' physical
education; Ernest Sackett, fifth
and sixth grades teacher and
Robert G. Work, seventh and
eighth "grades and principal.
I Senate Passes Bill

Wednesday night passed the.
Kennedy Immigration bill, of
which Sen. Richard L. Neuber
ger (D.-Ore.) is co-sponsor.
Sen. Neuberger said this fin
ally helps to solve the orphan
adoption question "which is im
portant to so many Oregon fam
ilies." '
The bill provides for admis
sion of unlimited number of
alien orphans who are adopted
by American citizens during the
next two years.
Chairman James Eastland (D.
Miss.) of the judiciary committee
told Sen. Neuberger on the Sen
ate floor that he anticipated no
difficulty in extending the or
phan provision following the
two-year trial period. Sen. East
land also told the Senate that
Sen. Neuberger "is one of those
most responsible" for the orphan
section being in the bill. Orphans
already in the country from
Korea and elsewhere will be ad
mitted to citizenship under this
legislation.

Some ultra-conservative jur
ists and eminent churchmen
have decreed that a fine woman
who has had a child in this way,
perhaps at the urgent request of
her husband who greatly desires
an heir, has committed adultery.
This statement is particularly
stupid and preposterous when,
as sometimes happens, the doc
tor who performed the insemina
tion was a woman!
Needlessly cruel has been the
decree of some jurists and
churchmen that, with an artifi
cial insemination, the innocent
child, who never did anything
wrong, must be branded for life
as illegitimate. What a miserable
trick to play on a baby! To what
lengths will obstructive people
go in their desire to meddle in
the purely private affairs of
their neighbors!
I imagine some of these ob
structionists belong in that group
of 80,000. or more persons who.
in any large city, can be counted
on always to vote against every
item on the ballot, no matter
how desirable and favorable to
the city some of these items are.
I remember when a wealthy
man offered to a city a magnifi
cent aquarium fully endowed
so that it would never cost the
tax payers a cent and every
one of the 80,000 chronic objec
tors in that city voted to reject
the gift.
