Sunday At Rogue Valley Club

The Oregon Senior Golfers as
sociation sweepstakes, an 18
hole one-day affair, is set for
Sunday. On Monday and Tues
day Rogue Valley area golfers
win be qualifying for the South
ern Oregon tournament. Wednes
day will see out-of-town men and
women qualifying for the SO
event.
Match play in the southern
Oregon opens on Thursday and
finals will be on Monday, Sept
Z, Labor day.
Some 55 linksmen from other
Oregon fairways are to be here
for the senior sweepstakes. They
will contend in A and AA classes
for low gross and net prizes. A
number of RVCC players will
participate.
Special Clasc
OSGA rivalry is for men 55
years of age and over. There
will be a special 50 and over
class for younger oldsters
among Rogue Valley men.

There will be men's, women s
and senior men's divisions.

ney. A hole-in-one contest is set

be a driving contest on Satur
day. On Saturday and Sunday a

on Monday there will be a nine-

Heads Open
Milwaukee HP) Manuel
De La Torre of Milwaukee, the
first day leader in the Miller
Open, might win his first major
golf tournament since he turned
pro seven years ago if his irons
continue to behave as they did
Thursday.
The 35-year-old pro at Milwau
kee Country Club made five
birdies on the last 11 holes to
wind up with a five under par
65 Thursday, tops in the field
of 152.
' Only one stroke behind De La
Torre at the start of today's 18
holes were Bo Winninger of
Odessa, Tex., and Jackie Burke
Jr., of Kiamesha Lake, N. Y.
Five players were bracketed
at 67 Don Whitt, Alameda,
Calif.; Al Besselink, Grossinger,
N. Y.; Bob Rosberg, San Fran
cisco; Howie Johnson, Houston,
and Walker Inman, Pensacola,
Fla.
Cat Gives Master
Trouble; Now on Sale

want a dull-witted alley cat
named Adam? The price tag is
$350.
Not too long ago Adam was
on sale at the Oregon Humane
Society for $1. He was bought
by student John Smallman and
installed in a fourth-story apart
ment. Exhibiting more of a cat's
natural xuriosity than brains,
Adam went exploring his new
quarters, leaping from window
ledge to window ledge.
The last ledge he attempted
he missed and fell four stories.
Taken to a hospital in grave
condition, Adam survived the
pile up at least $350 in doctor,
medical and hospital bills. His
owner says that paying that
bill would mean quitting school
and he has no intention of quit
ting school.
Adam, now the pitcure of
health and vigor, lives on at
the hospital, the bills still
mounting and without a friend
in the world.
Girl Is Saved From
Between Buildings
Providence, R.I. r A
chubby. 3-year-old girl, wedged
between two buildings for w
hours, was dug out by a wreck
ing crew Thursday.
The child, Eileen Fabey. was
crying as rescuers brought her
through a cheering and weep
ing crowd of 1.000.
Eileen was taken to Rhode
island Hospital in a waiting
ambulance.
She had dipped into the eight
inch space Wednesday, appar
ently while chasing a kitten.
Retired RR Worker
Dies in Spokane
Spokane Charles C.
Witts. 73, Portland, Ore., died
here Thursday.
Deputy Coroner William E
Jones said Witts, a retired
SP&S railroad worker, was at
tending Moose convention activ
ities at Manito park here Dr.
Jones was investigating to learn
the exact cause of death.
Witts home address was list

Konsek, playing in the same
three-some as Nicklaus, carded a
par 72 Thursday to add to his
first round 73 for a one over
par 145 total. Nicklaus, the 1956
Ohio Open titleholder, had a
four over 76 for a two-day score
of 147.

Huskies Plan

football team, under ex-Okla-homan
Jim Owens, will run
from the split-T and "belly
series" again, but only time will
tell how well.
Whereas the Huskies can look
for some improvement because
of greater familiarity with the
offense than a year ago, they
face a couple of handicaps
which are new:
1 Pacific Coast defenses will
see more of the offense this fall,
with, California under Pete Elli
ott switching to it and Don
Clark at Southern Cal planning
to utlilize an attack which isn't
too different. Last year only
Oregon and Washington ran the
Split-T.
2 The depth in running backs
and in tackles up front to clear
the way, which characterized
the 1956 team, is gone. With it,
of course ,is the ability to run
fresh talent in and out of the
game at will. '
Because of these two factors,
and particularly the latter, it's
difficult to see the Huskies im
proving on their offensive record
which in 1956 showed 34 touch
downs in 10 games and 2688
yards gained on the ground,
good for a school record.
McKay Meets With Army
Engineers Wednesday

three hours Wednesday with
Army engineers to discuss Col
umbia river basin projects.
McKay, former interior 1 sec
retary, recently was named to
the commission post by Presi
dent Eisenhower. He was sworn
in Aug. 15.
He will attend, a meeting of
the commission at Niagara,
N.Y., Sept. 28.

It solemnly voted Thursday
to dub its chief janitor with the
classier title of chief custodian.
The assistant janitor got a
new title, too. He's now the as
sistant custodian.
