May Prevent Being
Hit by Lightning
Boston W Lightning will
kill approximately 230 persons
in the United States this year.
That Is the annual average dur
ing the past decade. An addi
tional 1,000 or so are injured
every year.
What are your chances of be
ing hit by lightning? Not very
great if you take common-sense
precautions whenever you hear
the warning rumble of thunder.
Here are some suggestions from
the National Safety Council:
1. If there is any choice of
shelter, choose
(a) Large metal or metal-frame
buildings.
, (b) Dwellings or other build
ings protected by lightning rods.
(c) Large unprotected buildings.
(d) Small unprotected build
ings. 2. Avoid the immediate vicin
ity of electric light circuits, light
ning conductors and downspouts,
screened doors and windows,
especially if open; stoves and
fireplaces, telephones and any
igetal object projecting through
wall or roof.-
3. If unavoidably out of doors,
keep away from isolated trees,
wire fences, hill-tops and fvide
open spaces, small sheds and
shelters in an exposed location.
4. Try to reach thick timber, a
cave, a depression in the ground,
a deep valley or canyon, or the
vicinity of a steep cliff.
Auto Safety
Persons struck by lightning
are sometimes revived by arti
ficial respiration. A person
struck does not carry a charge
of electricity. It is perfectly safe
to touch him.
The ordinary result of being
struck is electric shock, or burns,
or both. The usual first aid meas
ures should be applied.
Though usually e associated
with the thunderstorm, light
ning strokes have been observed
on clear days, giving rise to the
expression "a bolt from the
blue."
There are many 'varieties of
lightning sheet, stak, bead
ed, ribbon, forked, heat and glo
bular or ball lightning
References to lightning are
found in the earliest known writ
ings. God's control over light
ning is often mentioned in the
Old Testament. In ancient
Greece, thunder and lightnfhg
were considered omens of Zeus.
Records show that most light
ning casualties in America oc
cur in rural areas or small
towns.

June Havoc Career Starts
Still Going Despite Spilled

New York HPi It's hard to
write about June Havoc because
there is such an e n o r mous
amount of material that you
don't know where to start. For
instance, when we had lunch she
was wearing a blouse on which
was emblazoned the Constitution
of the United States, and she
spilled chef's salad over the Pre
amble and part of Article I.
For instance: She has written
an autobiography, in longhand,
which she says is rather hard on
her editor to read because she
never went to school a day in
her life. The book covers only
the first 13 years of her life, but,
believe me, that's enough for
one book.
For instance: She has a beauti
ful sister named Gypsy Rose
Lee, who, she says, can't sing,
can't dance "all she's got is
eight million dollars and drives
a Rolls Royce; mother wanted
her to learn to play the sax, but
think how that would look, play
ing the sax and driving a Rolls
Royce." '
The way she learned to write:
"I'm an amateur. I learned the
way I learned to kiss. Just grop
ed my way."
Her pets: "I have seven dog
people and three cat people. I

father? a Yorkshire terrier I got
in London nine years ago. His
wife is a chihuahua. Poor old

stealing automobiles are under
21 years of age. Stealing motor
cars appears to be one of the
teen-agers favorite outdoor
sports. Why hasn't some clever
fellow with an inventive mind
originated an automobile burg
lar alarm? For example, a de
vice which will start a siren
sounding off incessantly when
the car is started by somebody
other than the rightful owner.

written, females didn't begin to
grow gray until in their middle
fifties. It is said that now most
women discover their first gray
hair when they are about 35.
Of course, there is no tragic as
pect to it. All they have to do
is to decide whether or not to be
a brunette, a dazzling ash blonde
or a redhead and make a beauty
shop appointment td have it ar
ranged.. Hair dyeing is an ef
fective appearance rejuvenator
if expertly handled. However,
some females, especially synthet
ic redheads, are frequently vic
tims of inexpert dyeing jobs
which make them look slightly
freakish.

measurements to do with acting
ability? Minsky show girls and
strip tease dancers should be
publicized by their bust measure
ments. Actresses by their mental

How about Helen Hayes? Cer

Dynamite Causes Airplane Explosion
Washington OPI The Civil
Aeronautics board said Monday
that laboratory tests indicated
dynamite was the cause of an
explosion in a Western Airlines
two-engine plane near Daggett,
Calif.
A CAB spokesman said that
after examining scorched pieces
of the fuselage, laboratory ex
perts were satisfied that dyna
mite caused the destruction of a
28 square foot section of the
fuselage.
As a result of the accident,
passenger Saul Binstock was
blown out of the Convair craft

and fell 10,000 feet to his death.
, The FBI said it also was inves
tigating the cause of the mishap
but would not comment further
until the probe was completed.
The CAB spokesman said the
board was concerned only with
finding the "probable cause" of
the accident and had no interest
in criminal prosecution. That,
he said, is up to the FBI.
Immediately after the inci
dent, the plane made an emer
gency landing at George Air
Force base, Calif. There were no
other deaths or injuries.

Leadership Vital
Phase of Program
A vital phase of the FFA pro
gram is development of leader
ship, advisors state.
Due to present market condi
tions and the farmer's role as
key man in the economy, farm
youth must be taught to repre
sent themselves and their prob
lems. .
Self-government in the three
chapters at Central Point, Eagle
Point and Phoenix bears on this
aim. Chapter members elect their
own officers. These officers have
the responsibility of designing
the work program for the ensu
ing year. The fall program starts
with a day devoted to leadership
in training for new officers.
Officers from 10 schools of
southern Oregon will meet Sept.
28 at the Eagle Point vocational
agriculture building. Officers of
the state association of FFA will
be present to assist in develop
ing officer leadership.
Leadership is spread through
the rank and file FFA members
by committee organization.
FFA members carry their
leadership responsibilities to the
community by speaking to
Granges, civic organizations,
school PTA's and other such
groups. .
Each year the chapters use
their own funds to send two dele
gates to the national convention
in Kansas City. Here they ex
change ideas with other FFA
boys from all over the nation.
Washington OP) The House
has passed a bill approving the
Klamath River Basin compact
between California and Oregon.
The Senate already has passed
a similar measure, but the House
version, passed Monday, will
have to go back to the Senate
for concurrence in a technical
amendment.
Medford's NEW ARMORY
Great Britain on
Verge of New Tests
Honolulu OB Great Britain
appears to be on the verge of a
new series of nuclear tests in the
Christmas island area, the Hono
lulu Advertiser reported today.
The Advertiser said that by
this week end, 20 British trans
port planes carrying top-secret
cargo will pass through the air
base island of Canton en route
to Christmas from Australia.
At the same time, the U.S.
Navy reported Britain has re
newed its 600,000 square mile
danger zone around the nuclear
testing site, 1,200 miles south of
Honolulu.
On July 27, the British reis
sued a notice to mariners warn
ing that the danger zone would
remain "until further notice."
The Advertiser speculated the
A-bomb tests scheduled for Mar
alinga in South Australia next
month had suddenly been trans
ferred to Christmas island in
the wake of strong Australian
protests.
It noted the current airlift
through Canton was 'similar to
the big air movement that pre
ceded Britain's testing of three
H-bombs this spring.
Policeman's Work
Found Never Done
Hollywood (IF) Accident in
vestigation officers Robert Par
dini and Robert Spottswood
found that a policeman's work
is never done.
They were returning to police
headquarters after acting as
technical advisers for location
shots in San Francisco for CBS
TV's "Lineup" when they saw
a man trying climb over a
fence. They stopped him and he
admitted he had just held up a
grocery.
