by mail. It
looks now as
if crooks have
found that this
is the most lucrative business
they can get into. One of the
Postal investigators who goes
about checking up on quacks
was amused to find that most
of those who advertise to cure
baldness are bald themselves!
Effects of Atom-Bomb Fall-Out
Last year, in a book (number
461) published by the National
Research Council, Drs. J. V.
Neel and W. J. Schull, experts
on genetics, summarized tne
careful studies that have been
made of the children resulting
from over 70,000 pregnancies of
Japanese women exposed to
bomb radiation in Hiroshima and
Nagasaki. For years it has been
feared by some scientists that
this radiation might produce in
the ovaries a large number of
so-called mutations, which would
result in malformed infants; but,
actually, no definite excess of
defective infants was found.
This should go far now to cheer
some of the people who at pres
ent are so panicky about "fall
outs." A Woman About to Have a Baby
All women who are about to
have a baby could be greatly
helped by reading a book with
the title, "Getting Ready for
Parenthood," by Dr. Mario A.
Castallo, (Macmillan Co., N.Y.)
It gives all the information that
a woman wants during her preg
nancy; it tells her what to expect
during labor; it tells what
clothes to take to the hospital,
and it tells something of two
to care for the baby after he or
she comes. It is clearly written
and with nothing to frighten the
prospective mother.
A Salt Poor Diet For Dizziness
dizziness. It can be tried, and
I hear that occasionally it does
some good. I myself might try
this diet if my ears were buzz
ing, but I would Quit it if it did
not soon show signs of helping
me. Many people find it very
unpleasant to live on an unsalted
diet, and wives of these patients
tell me that the husband com
plains bitterly about his tasteless
food. As my physician would
point out, there are all grades
of salt-poor diet, some bearable,
some almost unbearable, and
some even dangerous to life.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers
will understand that it would
be impossible for him to answer
requests for information or to
attempt to diagnose by mail.
