pearean festival company party given Tuesday
by the Alfred S. V. Carpenters at their home.

To Meet on Tuesday
Rogue Valley Navy Mothers
of America club will meet Tues
day, August 20, for an all day
session at the home of Mrs.
Glen Curtis, 839 Wabash street,
Medford. The meeting will start
at 10 a.m.
Luncheon will be served at
noon and members are asked
to take a covered dish and their
own table service. Mothers,
wives, sisters of Navy, Marine
Corps. Coast Guard, or Naval
Reserve personnel are invited
to attend.
Women attending are asked
to take their, own thimble and
thread fer sewing and mending.

Group to Attend
Oregon Festival;
Events Planned
Four women, all members of
the Portland Altrusa club, will
arrive in the valley today accom
panied by Mrs. Freda Cowling,
club editor for the Portland Ore
gonian, to spend a week in the
area. They plan to attend the
five Shakespearean plays, Festi
val lectures, and take tours.
This will be the third trip the
Festival enthusiasts have made
to the valley. They include Miss
Adeline Kendall, owner of the
Adeline Kendall Handicrafts
shop; Miss Pearl Base, assistant
vice president of the First Na
tional Bank of Portland; Mrs.
Ruth Kennedy, director of arts
and skills for the Red Cross in
Portland; and Mrs. Marguerite
Spicker, radiological technician.
The Medford Altrusa club
members plan to attend as many
plays with the visitors as possi
ble and have scheduled three so
cial events so members will have
an opportunity to meet them.
"A no host dinner will be held
at Mon Desir Inn, Central Point,
Tuesday evening. Reservations
may be made through Mrs. Julie
Tummers at the Inn. Thursday,
August 22, a no host luncheon
will be given by the club at 12:15
p.m. at the Rogue Valley Coun
try club. Reservations may be
made with Mrs. Adriepe Dippel
who is hostess for the event. Fri
day evening the group will dine
at the Ashland Elks club prior
to the play "Pericles." Mrs.
Maisie Daly or Mrs. Maude Cod
ding are making the arrenge
ment for the evening.
Mrs. Enid Rankin, president
of the Medford Altrusans, re
cently entertained the member
ship at a dessert in her garden
in honor of Miss Grace Smith,
former president, who recently
returned from a trip east where
she attended the International
Convention of Altrusa as a dele
gate. During the evening Miss
Smith reported on the conven
tion held in New Orleans. One
of the international officers
elected at the meet was Dr. Lo
retta Miller of Ellenburg, Wash.,
twelfth district past governor,
who was named second vice
president.
Miss Smith has accepted a po
sition as a county home exten
sion agent in the extension serv
ice of Washington state. Miss
Smith was given a past service
status and a leave of absence by
the local group because of the
years she .served on the executive
board and positions she held
within the club. She is a charter
member of the Medford club.
Paul Reinhardt
On Program For
National Session
Paul D. Reinhardt, instructor
in the drama department of the
school of speech at Northwest
ern university, Evanston, 111.,
and former costumer and actor
at the Oregon 'Shakespearean
Festival, will attend the na
tional convention of the Ameri
can Educational lheatre asso
ciation in Boston, Mass., August
25 through 29. He will be ac
companied by Mrs. Reinhardt
and daughter, Anne.
Mr.. Reinhardt will be one of
the speakers on a panel discus
sion, "Color in Theatrical De
sign: Organisation for Expres
sive and Aesthetic Values." His
particular topic is "A Costume
Designer's Approach."
Mrs. Reinhardt, the former
Miss Clara Daniels, is a daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Daniels,
407 Park street, Medford. She
was a leading actress with the
Festival for several years in
Ashland.
Prior to the convention the
Reinhardts plan to visit with
Miss Lucy Barton,' costumer at
the University of Texas', at her
summer home in Sandwich,
Mass. Another guest of Miss Bar
ton's at that time will be Ted
van Griethuysen who is return
ing to the United States after a
year's study in England. Mr. van
Griethuysen was with the festi
val company last-season.
After the convention they
plan to visit Miss Janet Saltus.
a former Ashland resident and
member of the Oregon Shake
spearean Festival company. Miss
Saltus is spending the summer
at Eagles Mere, Pa., where she
is a member of a theatrical

To Return Today
Three members of the Med
ford Business and Professional
Women's club will return today
from The Dalles where they at
tended an executive board meet
ing of the organization.
Members who drove to The
Dalles yesterday for the meet
ing were Miss Voda Brower,
president of the local group,
Miss Laura York, past state pres
ident, and Mrs. Harriet Watson,
district president.

mer in that resort area and has
as its nucleus some of the lead
ing actors and actresses of
Northwestern university. Miss
Saltus begins her junior year
this fall at Carleton college,
Northfield, Minn. Among her
roles at Eagles Mere this sum
mer have been Ophelia in "Ham
let" and Alma, the leading fem
inine role in Tennessee Wil
liams' "Summer and Smoke."
Prior to leaving for the con
vention Mr. Reinhardt designed
the costumes for the Northwest
ern university's productions of
"Love's Labour's Lost," "Mother
Courage," "Menaechmi," and
"The Mikado." Last winter in
addition to his regular costume
designing he directed a produc
tion of "Twelfth Night."
Cash vs. Credit

Speakers7 Club
Mrs. Arnold Bohnert was
moderator for a panel discussion
on "Cash versus Credit Buying"
at the last meeting of the Med
ford Toastmistress club. The
meeting was held at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Thatch
er Monday evening following a
picnic supper. Husband of club
members were guests.
Other panel members were
Mrs. Roy Rolls and Mrs. Thatch
er, who spoke for cash buying,
while Mrs. Ethel Mclntyre told
what credit buying had done for
the average person.
Mrs. Wallace Haskins gave
the educational talk which was
the history of the Medford club.
The club was started in 1950
to promote interest in correct
speech and parliamentary pro
cedure. Mrs.. Clarence Redmond was
topicmistress and used articles
chosen at random from a sale
catalog as subjects for the topics.
Others participating in the
program were Mrs. Clarence
Wilson who gave the invocation;
Mrs. Don Bergman, speech
evaluator; Mrs. Harry Marshall,
timer; Miss Irene Barclay, lexi
cologist, and Mrs. John Marler,
program evaluator.
The next meeting will be held
Monday, September 9, at the
new Girls Community club.
Guests at the last Monday
meeting were Mr. and Mrs.
Ralph Chandler.
Two New Members
Announced by Lodge
Mrs. J. C. Langston was ini
tiated at the last meeting of the
Women of the Moose and Mrs.
Dee Stradford had her member
ship transferred from the Rose
burg Moose Lodge to the local
group.
A film was shown for the
Mooseheart Alumni chapter
night program.
The Moose picnic was held
at TouVelle park last Sunday
with many families and friends
of lodge members attending.
Visitors Leave
After Brief Stay
Mrs. C. C. Leonard, Portland,
her daughter, Mrs. Marvin Ros
ette and son, Stephen Douglas,
Salem, left for their homes Sat
urday morning after a brief stay
in Medford. They motored north
with Mr. Rosette who arrived
Friday.
While here Mrs. Leonard was
a guest of Dr. and Mrs. C. G.
Van Valzah, 15 Geneva street.
The Leonards and. their daugh
ter formerly lived in Medford.
